I loved reading about the history of the distillery, but what I really need to know is:
Is a bottle of Very Old Fitzgerald still good after sitting up-right on concrete, in a dark crawl space for thirty years? Still partially gift wrapped?
This is one of eight different brands of whiskey that were given to my grandfather as gifts by well meaning people that never knew that he never touched the stuff.
I don't touch the stuff either so maybe he's telling me that this in my inheritance :)
Any in put on this will be greatly appreciated.

Jeff--
If you're looking for a starter bourbon like Redhook Blonde is a starter beer, you could do a lot worse than Jim Beam. If you're looking for one more on the Pilsner Urquell level, try Maker's Mark; it's a nice balance of rich and mild, without the hit of rye you'll get in bourbons like Wild Turkey or Old Forester, and the price won't kill you.
Cheers,
Lew

You should go, touring the distilleries is worth the trip, but then you can also get ALL the bourbons that are only sold in Kentucky! It's a beautiful place, and I was happy to live there, once upon a time...

I am not a bourbon drinker even though I hail from Louisville. I must try a bottle and see how it compares to by beloved malts. What do you recommend as a good starter bourbon.
