| bem2's Full Review: Onkyo TX-SR500 5.1 Channels Receiver |
In purchasing audio equipment, I try to find the best quality at the lowest price. This receiver fits the bill. Onkyo is known for its good build quality on high end receivers and it spares no expense for this baby. The sound quality is superb. And it's simple to set up. It took me about fifteen minutes to set up and get comfortable with the features. The manual is surprisingly well written. It needs to be since the receiver does not have on screen programming capability.
When I turned it on for the first time, I was blown away by the sound reproduction. Of course it helps to have good speakers, too, especially a good center channel speaker and subwoofer. If not, then you won't appreciate all of the receiver's capabilities.
The best feature is Pro Logic II, which allows you to easily configure the volume for each speaker in your surround sound system. This creates true surround sound just like the movie theater. In fact, once we upgraded to the Onkyo, we don't go to the movies anymore. We wait and rent DVDs because our system sounds much, much better than any theater.
I highly recommend this receiver to those wannabe audiophiles who just don't have the money to invest in a $1,500 receiver. At less than $300, you won't find a better deal. This receiver is high quality at a low price for those who occasionally view DVDs or play CDs. Because it's only 75 watts, the receiver may not be adequate if you have a very spacious room and you like to crank up the sound.
