Pros: Of the inexpensive beers, the best after Miller and some of the locals
Cons: "Red Necks, White Socks, and Blue Ribbon Beer" (image), watery
The Bottom Line: I'd buy Miller, but if you want a real cheapie, you could do a lot worse.

This is one of the cheapest beers you can buy. While not necessarily perjorative, that does set the parameters around which this beer can be discussed. It isn't going to be Boulevard or Bitburg, and it won't be Coors or Bud. On the plus side, it won't be Busch or (the ironically named) Milwaukee's Best, either. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra fifty cents and get Miller, but I know a lot of people don't like Miller. This is about the best nationally available super cheapie, however, first look around the cooler and make sure that Utica Club, Pearl, Stroh's or Old Style are not available.
This brewery is very proud of the fact that PBR was selected as "America's Best" in 1893. This is impressive, as it was the height of America's pre-Prohibition beer era, as soft drinks were just being marketed. One can see some reasons for that. The beer is hopped more than any other cheapie, and is very, very light. PBR is one brand that doesn't need a "lite" version.
This beer is drinkable, but should be quite cold. It goes with pizza, cookouts, and probably TV dinners. I wouldn't use it at formal dinners or large diverse gatherings.
The reason for the above sentence is the image of this brand. Charitably put, it is a "cowboy" or a "trucker" beer. Less charitably, it is a "redneck" brew.
If you're with friends who are about to buy Busch or Milwaukee's Best, try to talk them in to buying PBR. You'll introduce them to the taste of hops and avoid an unpleasant experience yourself.
