Although I am primarily a music reviewer, I do love beer...and I feel a certain moral obligation to direct those discerning music listeners to beers which perfectly sum up feelings, etc, of particular bands. Today's Band: Leeds punk legends the Mekons. Today's beer: Working-class, art student fave Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Let's pull no punches--PBR is definitely a cheap beer, with a thin weedy tast and a color that's a nearly transparent sickly yellow. Still, there's something incredibly charming about this little Milwaukee standby (drunken cries of, "Hey, it's #1!" and "If'n it was good enough for grandpa it's good enough for me!" not withstanding). First, the best thing about PBR is that it is cheap. In some places as cheap as $1.25 in bars, less than that at the package store. Although it's taste is hardly gourmet, it's still a high step above Budweiser, being not nearly as bitter as the "King of Beers". Secondly, it's definitely working-class, and when you listen to working-class music you don't daintily sip Negra Modelo.
The Mekons are a great band, and PBR is an...exceptional beer. Although I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it, if you're going to be listening to one of their record's tonight, go all the way and crack open an ice cold PBR. Feel the dirt collect under your fingernails and enjoy it's mediocre bitterness and light frothy foam.
(If you're unfamiliar with the Mekons' records and are curious, check out my reviews on several of their records on the music page under Mekons "Honky Tonkin'" and "The Story of The Mekons"--more album reviews to come)
