I am ending my Epinions.com hiatus by making my first Epinion in over 3 yrs.
What better than writing a batch of reviews on my new found joy; Pampered Chef
products. This is review #4 of 5.
This review is on the Pampered Chef Baker's Roller, item #1485 in the
Pampered Chef catalog.
From the Catalog:
"Two sizes of rollers for shaping dough on flat surfaces or up the side
of baking dishes. Removable pastry tool creates fluted edges or pierces
crusts to vent steam."
Sight and Feel:
The Pampered Chef Baker's Roller looks nothing like you would expect.
In fact, I think it looks more like a massage device than something I would use
in my kitchen on my food. It is about 10 inches in length with a black handle
that has two different plastic white rollers at each end. The larger
roller is 4 inches across and completely smooth and straight. The smaller
roller is about 2 1/4 inches and although it is also smooth, this roller is more
rounded. Since the Pampered Chef Baker's Roller is meant to be used
one handed, there is a thumb sized indentation in the handle above each roller
allowing for absolute comfort of the hand. An added feature is the
removable pastry tool that snaps onto the back of the handle. It
looks just like a mini serving fork, but has a rounded end for creating
decorative edges on pies and such, and it's fork-like end for piercing dough to
allow for the venting of steam or to use for crimping the crust around the edges
of pies. Overall, the Pampered Chef Baker's Roller has a nice looking
design that fits comfortably and feels natural in the hand.
Why Is This Better Than the Other Rolling Pins?
I was excited when I was able to use my Pampered Chef Baker's Roller
for the first time. For dinner, I had decided to make a homemade pizza
(well, about as homemade as you can get while using refrigerated dough, lol.) on
one of my Pampered Chef baking stones. I laid out the dough and started
rolling. One of the first things I noticed is how good the Pampered
Chef Baker's Roller felt in my hand. It was not too heavy, but I was
still able to roll out the dough without a problem. Because it is used
with just one hand, I was able to use my other hand to hold the dough still.
Another advantage to the smaller roller was being able to roll the dough into a
perfect circle with ease. There was no sticking to the roller and it did
not roll uneven. Once that was finished, I was able to unsnap my little
pastry tool and pierce through the dough so I wouldn't get any bubbles. I
was also able to use the the rounded end of the tool to make a decorative edge
on the crust. While baking, I didn't notice any bubbling and my crust
edges stayed pretty!
Since then I have used the rounded roller to roll dough
up the sides of my pie plate without any trouble and have used the pastry tool
for crimping the crusts around their top. I have also dripped spaghetti
sauce, berries with syrup, used it to roll food coloring dyed cookie dough, and
had numerous staining products come in contact with my white rollers and have
not had one single stain stay around.
I have found the Pampered Chef
Baker's Roller to be an essential tool in my kitchen and since it's
purchase, I have packed up my other rolling pin. It is easy and fun to use,
it wont stain and because of it's size, it has no problem fitting in one of my
drawers for storage or fitting in the dishwasher for a quick washing. Plus
because of it's ease of use, I have been able to make cookies with my daughter
without worry. The Pampered Chef Baker's Roller also come with a 3
year guarantee, although mine has taken quite a beating and has held up great!
Non-food uses for the Baker's Roller: (I would recommend using a
separate tool for non-food uses.)
Back and foot massager (great for labor
pains), rolling the bubbles out of new wallpaper, Play-dough toy.
Care and Handling:
The Pampered Chef Baker's Roller is dishwasher safe with the
recommendation to place the pastry toll into the utensil holder..
Any Negatives About the Product?
