Note: This bowl is label 'b' in the above picture.
The standard for mixing bowls seems to be from a company named Pyrex. I know this because I see them everywhere I go, including my mom's home and my own! In fact, I own 3 sizes of them myself! I love my bowls, but I have noticed over time and many MANY uses that the lettering painted on the outside has begun to fade a bit.
I paid no mind to it, as my bowls are only 3-5 years old (depending on which size you are looking at!), and I figure they will be with me a long time. Then I signed up as a Pampered Chef Consultant, and found something new, and even more exciting to rule the mixing bowl regime in my kitchen. What is it? Why a new 2-quart mixing bowl, the Classic Batter Bowl from Pampered Chef!
Why is it ruling the roost? First off, because unlike other batter/mixing bowls, it comes with a lid! Yep, mix up some pancake batter in it for the whole family, and then snap the lid on and put the remainder in the fridge for later! Or as one person told me, she makes it in the morning, cooks her pancakes, and those for her husband and younger children as they arise. Then she puts the lid on, and leaves it up to the older children - mainly teenagers - to get up at their leisure and make their own pancakes!
I could go on about some of the other cool things, but I think I'll outline them instead so you can see clearly yourself why this is a cool bowl!
Here are the features:
(The features list is information from materials Pampered Chef provided to me in hard copy, not online. All commentary is my own, or taken off the product itself.)
2-quart bowl: Like I said, it holds up to 2 full quarts of batter, lemonade, juice, water, kool-aid, whatever! This makes a great size for mixing and cooking in. (I like it for the microwave!)
Storage Lid: If you can mix it, you can store it! It also helps to keep food from spilling if you are moving a full bowl of liquid from one place to another.
Measurements listed on bowl: Just like Pyrex, the measurements are listed on the sides of the bowl. But wait, what is this? They are not painted on! Nope, these ones are built into the bowl so they cannot be rubbed or scrubbed off! Cool.
Pouring Spout: Yes, no round edge to pout over here. Like many of the better bowls out there, this one has a spout to direct your ingredients out from.
Oven-safe: Did I just write oven safe? Yes. Yes, I did! You can even bake a cake in this bowl. Gas, Electric, and of course Microwaves too! Just keep the lid in a nice safe area away from all of that though please!
Handle: Well, you have just got to have a handle! Duh!
Dishwasher-Safe: Just pop it in the dishwasher, and let it do the work for you! The lid can go to, as long as it is away from the heating element.
Use and Care: As with all PC Products (PC = Pampered Chef; not Porter Cable), you will have a manila card with instructions on how to use and care your product. You will also have 2 recipes with this one!
5-year guarantee: Yes, if something happens to your bowl, you can get it replaced if you keep track of your receipt within 5 years after purchasing it! I recommend that you put it under the silverware tray in your drawer.
Exclusive: This product was designed and produced just for PC, and made in the USA.
Any tips for using this, or things not to do?
Do not use this over or under an open flame. Best not to add liquid to a hot bowl. It would also be bad to use harsh cleaners or scrubbers on it. That could scratch it or weaken it, as it is made of glass. Also, best not to chance using it if it is chipped or cracked. Contact your consultant and get it replaced!
Much like stoneware, do not place the hot bowl into water to soak. Nor use hard sharp knives or utensils directly on it. You can freeze food in the bowl, but do thaw it before transferring it to an oven. The sudden temperature change could damage it.
I've heard of some really cool things to do with this bowl and baking in it. You can make a Barbie cake with the Classic Batter Bowl, and then use the smaller version, the Small Batter Bowl, to make a Kelly Cake. You can make a Baseball Cap Cake, half an Orange, half a Pumpkin, a Golf Ball, or even a football! Use your imagination, and heck, save on dishes!!
My Experience and Recommendation
I have no idea if my Pyrex bowls can be baked in, but I'm not willing to chance it. Besides, they have such a flat bottom, and this one is more rounded that I think this one is better for some things. When I am making a big meal, or doing a lot of holiday baking, I am glad to have multiple mixing bowls in my kitchen, and believe me, they are all in action!
I have used this one many times for mixing up fillings for braids and rings that I make occasionally. I use it in every kitchen show that I have held, as it is perfect for practically every dish I've made! Pancakes are a usual fare in my home, so this is used a lot for them also. I've only had to store some batter once, and it was not in there long before it was gone!
I must say that I can find nothing wrong with this bowl. It might be a bit heavy for some people, as it is made out of glass, but I just prefer using glass since it is so versatile. I just cannot say enough nice things about this bowl. I am glad that I have had it in my kitchen the last 10 months, and hope to keep up our wonderful relationship for many many years to come!
