| jeavinl's Full Review: Pampers Swaddlers |
I read a few reviews on Epinions about disposable diapers before I went to the hospital to deliver my first born and based on those reviews I bought a bag of Swaddlers. It seemed like everyone felt that the Swaddlers were more comfortable and more absorbent than other brands. A friend of mine had given me a bag of Target brand diapers at my shower so I figured Id test the two out before I stocked up on one type. Before going home, the hospital gave me a bag of Pampers Baby Dry and I had also received a few other generic brands at my baby shower. Of the five types I tried in those first few weeks, the Swaddlers proved to be the best.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT?
Swaddlers just seem to be made for newborns. They fitted my almost-nine-pounders bottom perfectly. The leg gathers werent too tight or too loose. They fit snugly without making marks on my daughters legs. Some of the other brands dug into her legs leaving not only marks but a rash.
The Swaddlers werent too tight because of their stretchy sides, which made them useable even when my daughter was nearing the weight limit for the next size up. With a lot of other types I had to move up to the next size well before she hit the weight limit. The waist is made to fit in a low-slung fashion so that the diaper doesnt rub against a newborns umbilical cord stump. That way, the stump gets air and can theoretically heal faster. What was even better about using the Swaddlers was that they were the one type of diaper that seemed fool-proof to put on. Even my husband, who always seemed to fumble with the Velcro and leave some part of our daughters tush exposed, could put them on our little one with ease.
All the other types I tried were too big and bulky and/or the leg gathers bunched up or didnt hold (and therefore leaked). All of the others tended to slip off in back or hang loosely in front. The ones that slipped off in back would allow the mushy newborn poop to leak out the back and make a very big mess. Clothing, sheets, bassinet, you name it, it would get dirty.
The other nice thing about the Swaddlers was that they have a soft cotton feel on both the inside and the outside. The cloth feels gentle and much more appropriate to a newborns sensitive skin than that of other diapers. Being a first-time mom, I wanted only the best for my little one. The Swaddlers were pricier than the other diapers, but they were made with a much higher quality. The Velcro tabs never broke off. The diapers always fit right. And I had hardly any problems with accidental leaks. Ive heard some moms say that they used higher quality diapers later on in their childs life (4-6 months and up) since thats when the poop (and therefore leaks) got messy (because of a change in feeding habits). But in my experience it was in the beginning that we needed heavy, round-the-clock absorbency. Im not sure if it was because I breastfed or because our newborn was still excreting meconium (greenish fecal matter leftover from pregnancy), but those first few weeks were rough and messy. Im so glad we used Swaddlers then. They were well worth the extra expense.
Unfortunately, Swaddlers are only available for newborns (under 18 lbs.). They come in three sizes: Newborn (up to 10 lbs.), Size 1 (8-14 lbs.), and Size 2 (12-18 lbs.). We used the Newborn ones and the Size 1s. After that I moved on to cheaper store brands.
