| Ames100's Full Review: Panasonic KX-TG6022 5.8 GHz Twin 1-Line Cordless P... |
This is Panasonic's current offering in a 5.8 GHz digital cordless phone. The 6022 is the 2-handset package in the 602x line, while the 603x packages include a digital answering machine in the base station. All the handsets are compatible, and either type of base station supports up to 4 of the handsets connected to a single shared telephone line via the base station. You can't use the two included handsets independently on two seperate lines though - only the single common base station can be connected to a phone line.
These phones have pretty good voice quality. The background noise level is low, but the voice sounds just a little bit harsher and more metallic than a good analog corded phone on the same line. As expected from a digital phone, they are free of any obvious interference or voice quality loss until the range gets too great - then the voice starts to break up intermittently. Using the 5.8 GHz band avoids interference with many other devices operating in the popular 2.4 GHz band, including WiFi computer networks and microwave ovens (which can be a great annoyance when someone turns on the microwave while you're talking on the phone!). Some other "5.8 GHz" phones don't use the 5.8 GHz band in both directions, but fortunately this Panasonic does.
The handset uses two standard AA NiMH rechargeable batteries (provided), which can be easily replaced. It has a relatively long standby time of 11 days on a fully charged battery, and up to 5 hours talk time (claimed - I've never tested it that long). A full battery charge from empty takes a fairly long 7 hours. The manual says it's ok to leave the phone in the charging cradle.
The range seems about typical compared to other cordless phones I've used in the same locations - nothing exceptional, but adequate for normal use around the home. The maximum range before signal breakup is reduced a bit when the battery starts to run low, but still quite adequate.
Nice features:
- Clear display with auto backlight
- Menu easy to understand and use
- Speaker phone in handset with adequate volume
- Scrollable redial list holds multiple numbers
- Voicemail indicator and quick voicemail access
- Selectable ring tone and flash color (red/green/amber)
- Phonebook for up to 50 names
- Displays name from phone book if Caller ID enabled
- Can program ring tone and flash color for individual phone book entries if Caller ID enabled
- Phonebook and voicemail number can be sent from one handset to another, so you only need to program once
- Intercom and conference between handsets supported
- Can transfer incoming calls between handsets
- Paging from base station to handset
- Alarm clock function in handset
- Uses standard replaceable AA NiMH batteries
And just a few cons:
- No quick dial feature (i.e., press button+number key to quickly dial a frequently-called number). Seems an odd lack in an otherwise full-featured phone, but I guess the phone book is easy enough to access.
- Does not pick up the current date+time automatically from incoming calls on the line, so you have to set each handset clock manually.
- No belt clip.
The ability to transfer calls between handsets is very useful in some situations, and not provided by all multi-handset phone systems in this category.
The design looks nice, but to me it doesn't seem quite ergonomically optimum - for example there isnt a comfortable indented grip position on the phone, and the handset doesnt quite slip into place securely in the charging station without a little extra jiggle to make sure it's stable. Nothing that's a big deal, just not quite perfect.
Overall another fine product from Panasonic, and a bargain at the price I paid.
