deenaf's Full Review: Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo
Flashback to 11th grade, 1983, and I discover Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo and hair care products, only I am too broke as a high schooler to buy them! LOL! Back then, $5.00 for shampoo was expensive! I do remember vividly though, that the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo smelled gorgeous (images of gorgeous hair via the smell, hence a gorgeous smell) and much like watermelon.
The Problem
Present day, two weeks ago: I go to get my hair cut and the stylist takes note of some heavy hairspray buildup on my bangs (ok, so I still wear bangs, just like 1983). They use this special shampoo on me but the buildup is still there. I completely STOP using hairspray and try vehemently to get this buildup out. It looks like sticky dandruff on my bangs! I try Neutrogena, Clairol Herbal Essenses, Bb Shampoo, and my old stand by Suave. Nothing gets out the buildup. I figure that I am just going to sweat it out until the bangs grow and I can cut it off! Lame, right?
Re-Discovering the Past
Then, I was in my local “mom and pop” drug store buying diaper ointment (shameless plug for another epinion: http://www.epinions.com/content_73316208260 where said “mom and pop” drug store is referenced) and I saw the Paul Mitchell styling products line. I saw all these different kinds of shampoo but couldn’t remember which I loved back in HS. So I started smelling them. Right there and then! When I got to the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo, the light bulb lit and I remembered the name Awapuhi! I don’t even know what that means! And it doesn’t exactly smell like watermelon either but I bought it anyway. Now it smells more like tropical fruit.
The Shampoo and the Solution!
Bye Bye Buildup! After only two washings with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo, the hairspray build up is completely gone from my bangs! I can go out in public again!
The Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo is a cleansing shampoo that is supposed to be body-building. Both claims are true. My hairspray buildup was removed and my hair seems fuller, even without blow drying. The shampoo is quite thick and the directions are to put a small amount on your hands, rub them together and then apply by massaging it into your scalp. It is gentle enough to use every day.
The shampoo itself is a creamy, white pearlescent color. It goes on easily and rinses out cleanly and quickly. It is mild so your hair won't feel dry or stripped.
Paul Mitchell products also don’t test on animals. Gee, why shouldn’t the animals have soft shiny full fur too? Kidding. I am glad they don’t test on animals because I frankly don’t see the need for a shampoo to be tested on animals. For many consumers, this is an important fact when deciding on what to buy. Awapuhi Shampoo fits this bill.
The Cost
My 8.5 ounce bottle was $4.95. It was worth the price. It smells great, works great, isn’t tested on animals, AND claims that it can also be used as a body wash! Anyone have a loofah? This shampoo comes in larger sizes as well and is probably more cost effective in the larger size but my store only had this size available. I assure you that this size will last months. You need only use a dollop at a time.
The Ingredients
Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo contains the following herbal ingredients:
Hawaiian Awapuhi
Chamomile
Henna
Rosemary
Aloe Vera
Jojoba
And many of things in every OTHER brand of shampoo such as water, sodium laureth sulfate, etc. It is this combination of ingredients that create the scent, texture, and cleansing ability of Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo.
The Company
You can find other Paul Mitchell products at their fabulous website: www.paulmitchell.com. The Paul Mitchell company has been around for over 20 years and is still going strong. They have such a diversity of products now that it almost seems a shame that I, the old dog, cannot be taught new tricks. I stuck with what was familiar but I may be ready to venture out and try another Paul Mitchell product.
The Bottom Line
In the meantime, you MUST try Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo. It will give your hair a break from your old shampoo and infuse some body, shine, and life back into it. And it smells great too, not watermelon, but great nonetheless.
