One of the problems that plague a working musician is hearing the rest of the band during a performance. Venues all have inherent quirks due to the way they are laid out. Generally speaking you dont get proprietors that take the time and expense to properly lay out a stage, generally offering whatever leftover space they can muster to squeeze a band in. Curtains, walls, high traffic, intrusive walls, windows and room materials all can play to the detriment of on-stage acoustics. A good defense for poor acoustics is the stage monitor.
I have used a number of stage monitors over the years and like most of them. One of the models I seem to come across lately is the Peavey PV12M .
Equipped with a 12 Sheffield woofer and 1 compression driver, the PV12M
is capable of handling 500 watts peak power. The trapezoidal shaped PV12M can also double as a pole mounted main for smaller venues and is equipped with a pole coupling on its side. At just under 38 lbs, you wont curse your way up a set of stairs lugging this PA component for load ins/outs. The carpeted surface, steel recessed handles and metal open meshed grille are durable enough to withstand the rigors of the road.
Dimensions are as follows:
22 inches wide
12.5 deep
16.25 height
The 90º horizontal and 40º vertical dispersion is fairly standard and obviously the more room you can put between the monitor and your will give you greater even ordered insight into what is happening across the stage and frequency band. Twin ¼ inputs on the side panel allow for single or series input into your PA amplifier for stereo or mono setups.
During a performance with the Peavey PV12M Floor Monitor you are never left in the dark where the band is. The 500 watt power rating goes a long way to assure that any small to medium sized venue you play, you will never lose the band in the mix, provided you have a good mix setup to begin with. I know for a fact on a few occasions our sound tech pumped more than 500 watts into the PV12M and they handled them, though I wouldnt recommend prolonged over-powering of the PV12M monitors.
At just under $250.00, you would be hard pressed to find a better value/performance ratio anywhere. The Peavey PV12M Floor Monitor is a good buy that will take the normal wear and tear of the road with flying colors. I give the Peavey PV12M double thumbs up!
