I love doing Sudoku numbers puzzles, but to complete one I seem to erase more than I write. To make my puzzles more enjoyable I pulled out my Pentel Clic Eraser.
The Basics
The Pentel Clic Eraser is a plastic barrel about 5 long and 1/4" in diameter. Inside the hollow barrel is a soft 3 1/2 long white eraser. To use, slide the clip down along the barrel to advance the eraser. As the slide moves it makes a distinctive click sound. Once a minimal amount of eraser tip is exposed you are ready to erase. Near the tip is a small cutout area to press down on. This prevents the eraser from being pushed back up into the barrel while erasing. Once you are done the clip slides back up to retract the eraser back into the barrel. Pentel Clic Erasers come in a variety of colors, although we purchase them in mass quantities at Costco where they are only available in a black barrel.
Our Experience
I have been using Pentel Clic Erasers for at least 15 years. As an engineering student in college I used mechanical pencils almost exclusively. Of course the small erasers on pencils were no match to the amount of erasing I did so I had to find something that lasted a little longer. The Pentel Clic Eraser was the answer. They do a great job of erasing my standard #2 pencil markings and make a minimum amount of eraser scraps. The eraser fuzz is less sticky and easier to brush away than the pink gummy rubber erasers of my past. It does not take a lot of pressure for these erasers to quickly allow for rewrites. The barrel is a comfortable diameter to work with.
These erasers are quite gentle on standard copy and notebook paper. Unless you are pressing hard or erasing heavy lines you dont have to worry about putting a hole in the paper. Obviously the eraser life will depend on how much erasing you do. If you advance the eraser too far, anything longer than about 1/4" of an inch the eraser may break off.
The tip of the eraser is about 3/16 in diameter making it fine for erasing a couple of numbers or letters efficiently. If you are erasing an entire page it can certainly be done with a Pentel Clic Eraser, it is just going to take some time. Because of the diameter this eraser isnt for fine detailed erasing, although you can use the edge of the eraser to erase smaller areas.
The Pentel Clic Erasers barrels are quite durable. In fact the purple one I am using with my puzzles I have had for about 10 years. When the eraser wears out I simply pop in a refill and I am ready to erase again. I dont recall ever having one of the plastic cases break, but due to their small size they are easy to misplace. My husband has never needed to put in a refill because his black barrel erasers seem to go missing before he can wear out the eraser, which is why we buy large packs. Since the eraser is separate from the pencil that gives you one additional writing instrument to have to keep track off.
Do You Need a Pentel Clic Eraser?
If you prefer pencils over pens for office or school work or enjoy crossword, or like me, SuDoku puzzles, then this long lasting eraser is a great companion for your pencil.
