I used to grab any pen and start to write. A pen is a pen, right? Not so! Some pens have wishy-washy ink colors ... or the ink skips or blotches on the paper. Other pens are uncomfortable, and the last thing I need are hand cramps. When I discovered Pentel RSVP Pens my attitude toward writing instruments changed.
Description
Each pen measures 6 1/4" long and is about 3/8" wide. The stainless steel pen point is about 3/16" long. The clear barrel is circular but with the illusion of being hexagonal since there is an inner hexagonal design on the inside of the smooth outer barrel. In other words ... it looks cool.
The cap is 2 1/4" long and snaps into place over the business end of the pen. The cap also fits onto the end of the pen when the pen is being used. A nice plastic clip on the pen can anchor the pen to papers or a shirt pocket.
A great feature of the RSVP pen is the rubberized finger grip toward the tip of the pen. It is an inch long and wraps around the entire barrel. Evenly spaced rounded craters on this rubberized grip help the fingers keep their grasp.
It is easy to tell the color of the pen ink, too. Not only is the barrel clear so that the ink is visible. But the rubberized finger grip matches the ink color. The end of the pen is plastic with a 5/8" end piece that is also the color of the ink. Even the tip of the cap has an embedded ball beneath the clear plastic that is color coordinated to the ink color.
These pens come in an assortment of colors: blue, black, green, red, pink and violet. As an example, the assortment Staples offers has 5 black, 2 blue, 2 red, 1 green, 1 pink, 1 violet.
My Experiences
I love these pens and always keep the blue, green, and red colors next to my computer and calendar. Those are the colors I use most often. I admit that I dont write with pink or violet ink, but the girls love writing with those colors. Ive always preferred writing with blue ink, so others are using the black RSVP pens.
I like the pointed stainless steel pen tip. The ink flows well. The pen writes a smooth line, and the medium point has a nice width to the written line. The colors are dark, which is important. I hate wishy-washy faded ink. Give me bold colors that leap in easy-to-read fashion from the page. The sharp point is also great for writing on carbon forms. It is easy to read the original and the three layers of carbon copies beneath it.
The RSVP pen is well balanced and easy to hold. The rubberized grip keeps my fingers in place and also cushions them. This is important to me since I tend to forcefully grip pens. The rubber grip also has a slight texture to it and feels pleasant, unlike some of those slick hard rubber grips one finds on pens. I also like the rounded craters dotting the grip; they naturally cup my fingers.
With other pens, it is sometimes hard to keep track of the cap. Some caps just dont sit firmly on either the pen tips or the end of the pen. With the Pentel RSVP pen, I can actually hear the cap snap into place over the pen tip so that I know it is secure. The cap also snugly sits on the end of the pen; it actually takes a little tug to release the cap from the end of the pen, so I know its not going to get lost.
If I had to change one thing on this pen (and this is being picky!) ... I would make the plastic clip on the pen so that it has a tighter grip. This pen clips fine to a shirt pocket. However, it does not hold well to one sheet or just a few sheets of paper the pen slides. It grips a wad of papers great, though.
Purchasing
Staples offers a 12-pen assortment for $5.29. OfficeMax sells a 5-pen assortment for $2.99. Office Depot has a 6-pack of assorted colors for $3.95.
Comparing the price of these pens to other stick pens, the RSVP costs more. Buying a 12-dozen assortment from Staples means the cost for each pen is .44 cents. Bic Cristal Grip pens cost $2.55 a dozen, which equals .21 cents a pen. PaperMate ComfortMate pens are $4.29 a dozen, costing .36 cents each.
Would I purchase a color assortment again, or just purchase a package with pens all the same color? The assortment was a good one-time experiment to get a feel for the colors. However, next time I will buy one box of blue, one box of green, and one box of red. I use these colors a lot.
Summary
Im willing to pay more for the comfort and writing superiority of Pentel RSVP Pens. The ink flows smoothly, the pen is easy to grip and hold, and its well-balanced. I can write longer and my hand feels great using this pen compared to using other pens. The RSVP pen is my favorite. I highly recommend them to others.
