| ImAmes's Full Review: Perfect Vision: A Mother's Experience With Childho... |
March 16th, 2001...the day I was told my child had Cancer. My world would never be the same again, what people take for granted I would cling on to, just so I could feel even a day of normalcy with what now lay before me. My daughter, Emily, has Retniblastoma, and this is the Cancer term I placed in my search engine a few months ago, hoping maybe a bit of comfort, maybe some answers, but most of all knowledge about this heartbreaking disease
My search came to this book: "Perfect Vision: A Mother's Experience with Childhood Cancer." I ordered it through Amazon.com for $10 and received it 2 days later. It is an easy read, contains 120 pages, and is a softback book. When I got it, I first treated it like the plague. I wanted to so desperately read it, but I knew that I would find myself reading my own life story in the pages, and somehow, I wasn't sure if I was ready to face those demons.
Mustering up all the strength in the world, I read it this past week. What pushed me to read it, was the fact that my daughter's Cancer has taken over her left eye, and it will be removed this week. Somehow I thought maybe the book would hold the key, to keep me sane- to get me through the hardest week of my life.
Perfect Vision: A Mother's Experience with Childhood Cancer is about the obvious, a regular mother who discovers that her daughter, Kari, at 12 months of age, is diagnosed with Retniblastoma. The book explains how they found out- which is how most do see the tumors. Kari's mother saw it, the way you and I see people's red eye in a picture, this is how parents catch a glimpse of the beginning of a long nightmare.
Although I found the book does not detail every doctor appointment or EUA (Exam Under Anethisia) it does express to the reader how Kari lived with the Cancer. She started off rough with it, but seemed to smooth out until she hit the age of Junior High. Kari then hit a wall full force- a tumor began to grow above her eye, into her forehead and outward. This is the risk that Kari's parents, and many Retniblastoma parents, take with any kind of radiation treatment. The doctors tell you that the External Beam Radiation or that the Radiation plaque will shrink the tumors, and usually do, but at what cost? The cost of your child's face deforming, and very high chances of your child getting any secondary cancer down the road such as Breast, Brain, etc.. The world of Cancer is a world of the better of two evils.
I do not want to give away the ending, because it holds the true key on how brave the Brunner's and Kari truly were. I just know that having been through a year of Cancer with my own daughter, I hope that I can have Sharon's courage, strength, and endless optism for Emily's years to come. This book is an inspiration to all parents with children dealing with Cancer, and it will show what the true power of love and God can truly be if you let them both in.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these books are donated to CURE- Childhood Cancer Association.
I would like to stress that this book focuses more on Kari's life, more of a biography, and not a journal of what they went through each day. I will admit that I was looking for a lot more detail, but I found myself enveloped in Kari's positive outlook and glow, that the rest didn't even matter, because we should all take a crash course now and then on how to live a good life.
3/10/02 On a personal note, I have emailed Sharon Higgins Brunner (the Author and Mother) myself. She was wonderful to talk to and was that beacon of light I was so desperately needing last week. I started this Epinion the eve before Emily's surgery, and now being days later, I can truly say that her book helped me through the tough times, and to remember, never give up on hope. If you would like to contact Sharon, please feel free to email me and I will let you know how to.
In loving memory of Kari Brunner and the healing recovery of Emily Rose Petermann.
