I remember getting my very first Pez from a pen pal. We would always send each other the weirdest and strangest things. As it turns out, I'm living in the United States now and she's living about 40 miles from Leeds. Its funny how things turn out but we've always swapped Pez for holidays, birthdays or any of our "special occasions" like June 20th, John Taylor's birthday. I have a few friends that are Hello Kitty fanatics, one of which should be getting a Hello Kitty Care package sometime before Christmas. These make for great stocking stuffers or small gifts and for kids, they are great for incentives or rewards for chores or a great score on a test.
Hello Kitty Pez Assortment
What designs do you get in this assortment? There are four; three traditional Hello Kitty figures [red, purple, teal stem] and Melody / My Melody on a light pink stem. The Hello Kitty on the purple stem has a bunny on her head, a cute touch but you don't notice the difference until you see it up close, she's winking at you! They all have solid feet so if you want to display them they won’t all over easily. There are Pez display stands that you can buy to show off your favorites but they aren't an official Pez item.
What don't you get in this set? This is important information if you are thinking about buying online because there are a lot of different Hello Kitty Pez out there. This isn’t the Crystal Collectible set, this isn't the Halloween set [only released in Japan] and this isn't the Hello Kitty and My Melody Collectible Pez Set that comes in a lunchbox. That one only has four dispensers and costs about $15.00. The twelve pack of Hello Kitty dispensers retail for about $14.00 but if you have a candy wholesaler in your area you can get them for about $10.00.
The dispensers cling to the core Pez principal of dispensing small oval pieces of candy with ease. You don’t get a choice of the flavors of the candies but when you buy replacements you can choose any flavor you like. The dispensers are well made and sturdy so even if you have a kid that is a complete hellion, the chances of them breaking one is slim. Outside of stepping on it or beating it with a rock, the stems rarely crack or show any sign of wear over time. That doesn't mean that they are indestructible it simply means that they are designed to last a long, long time.
Are there any cons to these dispensers? Well, you only get two rolls of candy per package so you will run out but refill packages are sold pretty much everywhere. The Hello Kitty with the purple stem and bunny is the one that you have to be careful with; the bunny can break off if you toss it in your backpack or a child gets a hold of it and starts smacking it around. Not only is that going to damage the dispenser but it could pose a choking hazard if they pick it up and start chewing on it. Because these are pink, purple and light blue they are 100% girlie so I doubt many little boys would get into the whole Hello Kitty theme.
Loading the dispenser is pretty easy; slide out the sleeve and insert the candies into it then close it. To dispense the candy tilt the head backwards and a piece of candy pops out. There are a lot of variations of the classic Pez dispenser and there are more than a few that are classified as "girlie" but let's face it, you can’t really get much more girlie than something in the Hello Kitty family. You can buy these individually if you want but you are going to pay a lot more for them. If you are making baskets or thinking about handing them out for Halloween, consider hitting a larger candy store to buy them box to save some cash.
The Bottom Line
These are a great small gift to toss in a basket or add to a Christmas Stocking and because there are four different designs in this collection you can have different ones for different people. Some kids scream if they get the same thing as someone else; others get ticked if they get something that is exactly like what their sister or cousin got. Even so, when it comes to something that is Hello Kitty and in the form of a Pez dispenser, the only time they are going to complain is when they run out of candy!
