| jljohnston's Full Review: Philips AZ7781 Personal CD Player |
I've owned this model of Philips personal CD for about 3 years now. I don't find occasion to use it a lot, but a recent and long trip on Amtrak reminded me of it's good quality.
This is a compact unit, with flush mounted controls that can be "locked out" when transporting to prevent unwanted activation. The anti shock memory is only 25 seconds, but that has been more than adequate when walking or bike riding. There is a bass boost control and a "resume" function that remembers where you were on the CD even when powered down.
The headphones that it came with were just about worthless. Very low sound levels and poor frequency response and bulky. I replaced them with Sony "ear bud" style (model MDR-W10, $15) that sound great and give more than adequate volume levels; easy to store when travelling as well.
This is a CD-R/CD-RW compatible model, but when I played cheap, "no name" CD's that I'd burned on my Mac the unit would "lose it's place" and sit and search. Apparently the dye on the cheap CD-R is not consistent enough for the understandably lower powered laser in this portable. Moral of the story; buy quality CD-R's.
After three years, this is getting a little dinged up but still functions well and has been a good value.
