| merg1's Full Review: Ping G2 Irons |
I play a lot of golf (over 100 rounds this year) and I was looking for a set of irons that were easier to hit both in terms of forgiveness and impact on my hands and arms. My Pro highly recommended the Ping G2 irons with the standard graphite shafts. He said he recommended this combination for his Dad who was my age (59) and he loved them. I had been playing Titleist DCI 762 irons with steel shafts.
We went to the range to try them out. I found that they were much easier to hit because of the big sweet spot and the Ping design for these clubs. I had read reviews in Golf Digest on these clubs that stated in there tests these were the easiest clubs to hit for golfers of all skill levels. My handicap is 10 and I have always hit my irons well. I have played over 60 rounds with the Ping G2 set and I say without reservation that this is the most forgiving set of irons I have ever hit. I found that my Titleist set worked well if you hit them square but any hit near the toe of the club resulted in a very poor shot. This was not the case with the Ping G2 set. I found that shots hit on the toe still went straight and far. This fact alone sold me on the value of these irons.
The Pro put me through a fitting session to insure I had the correct lie and shaft. This is something Ping has really perfected over the years. Most Pros are trained by Ping to get the right clubs in your hands and this makes a big difference in the results. Ping uses a color coding system to get the correct lie for your swing. Have a trained club fitter help you get this right for your swing.
About the clubs: They look very much like my old Titleist set so the change in equipment was an easy one to make. I like the way Ping puts the number of the club on the face of club at the toe. This makes it very hard to inadvertently select the wrong club. The graphite shafts definitely are easier on the hands and arms and I highly recommend these for older golfers.
Ping has just introduced a new model- the G5 which they claim are even easier to hit. This is good news for anyone looking for the G2 since you should be able to find some good closeout deals.
The Ping G2 irons are by far the easiest irons to hit I have ever played. They make the game of golf more fun for the average golfer. I agree with Golf Digest that these are great clubs for golfers of all skill levels.
