Pros: Sleek look, plays MP3s, Progressive scan, fast loading, plays burned discs
Cons: May be hard to find...it's not being produced anymore, has trouble with SVCDs
The Bottom Line: Grab this little guy if you can find one. Has everything the causal DVD/MP3 user would want, but it appeases the major tech geek in us all.

| fishhavefeet's Full Review: Pioneer DV-444 DVD Player |
I tracked a Pioneer DV-444 down at the local Good Guys store here in California, and am glad I did! I picked it up for about $220 (not bad at all). It was their last one too.
I got it hooked up in about 5 minutes (would have been less, but I had to move some stuff in my A/V cabinet. I hooked the audio up with a digital optical cable (to my 5.1/DTS compatible amp). So here's how she did...
SOUND - Great sound. Tested the DVD of "The Matrix" first and played the lobby shooting spree scene. Very clear and crisp, with deep bass. Exactly what I expected
VIDEO - Very nice. Plays well on my Mitsubishi big screen projection TV. I don't have a progressive-scan compatible TV, so I don't know how that works yet.
PERFORMANCE - Loads discs fast. Will play any burned disc. I tried CD-Rs and CD-RWs with no problems. Plays DVDs, CDs, VCDs, and MP3 discs (really good output on the MP3s, so make sure your MP3s are encoded at 192kbs or higher). Only displays about 8 letters of the MP3 title, but that's not a big deal to me. I can tell what song it is without looking at the player! :)
OVERALL - I recommend this player. It does have some issues with playing SVCDs, but it's not supposed to play them anyways. There are ways to fix this, but I haven't tried any yet. This is a good player for your main system. Nice and slim too, and suprisingly light
