| spriggand's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-47TX 7.1 Channels Receiver |
I purchased this baby as a Christmas gift from my wife to myself this past December. What a present! After owning 2 receivers over the last 5 years (and ready for another upgrade) I decided to go all out on something I felt would fill my demands for a number of years to come. I'm NOT disappointed.
The Elite 47tx is a monster of a receiver. It's big, bold, beautifully impressive just looking at it. And, more importantly, it sounds just as good as it looks. With all of the different sound variations available, one can find a setting best suited for any film/music out there. My previous two amps (Yamaha and the Pioneer vsx960) had various room settings, however, I was hard pressed to find real usuable differences. When switching from one setting to the other, the sound would either be "drastically different" and almost unpleasant to "hardly noticable" and wondering why they even included the setting in the first place. The 47tx has so many different settings with VERY noticably subtle differences no matter what the music/movie playing one can find a setting to compliment the material.
I can't say enough about this receiver. The only thing which leaves me scratching my head is the sound dbl volume. One can hardly hear anything from -80dbl to about -40dbl. Then it's "low" to "listenable" from about -40 to -20. Warms up from about -20 to -14 (14 being where I listen to most DVD movies at) and begins to crank at -5 to +0. Then all out BLOWS the house UP above that to the +8 (highest volume). But it's crystal clear at all levels even when standing in other rooms while at lower volume. The mark of a great machine. I have B&W speakers and this amp finially pushes the life into them.
The only drawbacks I've found is: 1) the weight at 65lbs! Most free standing racks with glass shelves (such as Bell-O's) only have a 50lb limit so I had to heave the old rack and custome build a brand new one (which does look a lot nicer than the old one anyway). 2) is the remote. To be such an impressive piece of hardware with enough bottons, I can't get all of my devices into it with the pre-set codes. I find it hard to believe that my well above average 2 year old Panasonic RP-59 DVD player isn't programmed into the device. Nor is my 61" Panasonic HDTV television. Nor is the Scientific Atlanic HD cable box. Consequently, I had to use the "learn" feature for all of the key functions for these most commonly used devices. Now I can even live with that, however, the memory for these "learning" designates are limited so I couldn't get nearly all of the buttons I use the most programmed into it before the "Memory Full" lit. And now I still have to have all the remotes laying around. Bummer. Looks like a BIG programmable universal remote is next on the list!
