| soothsayer's Full Review: Pommes Frites |
If you never tried Belgium fries before, or are intrigued about the mystique surrounding potatoes that are double fried and topped with mayonnaise, then head on over to Pommes Frites, a Belgium fries shop in the Village near St. Mark’s Place. You cannot miss the signboard outside with the large mockup of a cone filled with fries and topping.
Pommes Frites has been around since 1997, and is a mainstay for poor students attending nearby NYU for nearly twenty grand a year, and students who attend Cooper Union for free. An order of Belgium fries here cost on average $3.00, and they are pretty good. They use Idaho potatoes cut into strips (but not thick cut), and fried once in hot oil. When you order, they fry it a second time, put them in a large metal salad spinner to get rid of excess oil before serving them to you in a paper cone. You may be asked how you want your toppings, on top; inside and out; or on the side in a little plastic cup. Do it authentic, order the toppings on top.
At Pommes Frites, freshly made toppings share the limelight alongside the fries. There are over two dozen flavors to choose from. Most are mayonnaise (Hellmann’s) based, some ketchup based. There is also a nice mango chutney, and peanut satay. One topping comes free with your order. You can order extra toppings for $1.00 per flavor.
The fries were nicely done. They were hot, a bit crispy, golden brown, and slightly salty. Not limpid, or soft. If you had your fries smothered with mayonnaise toppings, you may find your fries tasting heavy and saturated with fat.
Pommes Frites has a tiny seating area where you may find yourself elbow to elbow with your fellow patrons. There are a couple of narrow long benches to sit on, and narrow rickety tables with holes drilled into them to hold your paper cone full of fries. The wattle and daub walls of the shop evoke the feel of a poor medieval village hut, and the cramped seating certainly reinforces that notion. There are some tiny paintings on the wall, but not much else in the way of ambience.
