I tried Post Grape Nuts years ago and it was one of the most boring cereals ever; there was no taste to it and it was hard to chew. Even when I added it to yogurt or tried to church it up with fruit, it was still hard to get down no matter how good it was for me. When I saw the 'new' variation of it a few months ago I decided to try it; maybe the inclusion of raisons and almonds would give it a nice little kick. I was right, even though it still had that gravel taste and texture to it, when you hit and almonds or raisins it did improve the bland taste of the Grape Nuts. I was as happy as a pig in mud when I saw them on sale at Rite Aid for two dollars a box. You can't even get the cheap cereal for that price so I loaded up and cleared the shelf. The 17 ounce boxes are small but that's because they are dense; pick one up and you will be surprised that they are as heavy as they are. I didn't feel bad about buying them all; the sale was over the next day and there were still seven boxes on the shelf. Apparently people don't know that you don't have to have a pound of sugar added to a cereal for it to taste good and be good for you.

Made from an awesome combination of 'crunchy nuggets', almonds, raisins and granola, this is a cereal that will definitely fill you up in the morning or any other time of the day. I was a little skeptical about having this as a hot breakfast but I followed the instructions on the box and was really surprised at how yummy I was and how it really changed the overall taste of it. Just combine a half cup of the cereal and some milk in a bowl and microwave. The longer you cook it the softer it gets. You will want to stand in front of the microwave while you make this because it can swell up like oatmeal does. Top it off with some honey, brown sugar or an artificial sweetener like Splenda and you are good to go. You can also take it with you in a container, add the milk and heat it up for breakfast on the go.
It does have the original Grape Nut taste to it but there is a little bit of a honey taste to it, most people won't want to eat this straight out of the box but I have gotten used to it so I keep a box on or next to my desk to snack on instead of chips or pretzels. The longer you eat this the sweeter it tastes so once you get used to it, you can eat it out of the box without adding any sweetener to it. I also like to use these on top of muffins when I make bran, apple cinnamon, banana nut or cranberry muffins. You do need to crush up the cereal a little so that it will stick to the tops of the muffins but that isnt a problem if you have a mortar and pestle. I like this a little more than the Maple Nut & Brown Sugar flavor but there are times when I will grab a box of that to snack on when I need a change from the almonds and raisins in this assortment. The brood aren't all that into this, they like the Maple Nut & Brown Sugar one so when I see that on sale I always grab them a few boxes; that too tastes completely delicious when you heat it up in the microwave.
Any time you hear someone say, "My god, I feel like I am crapping gravel!" followed by some moans and groans, it's never a good thing. Making this part of your diet doesnt mean that you should eat the entire box over the course of a day. Tommy saw the boxes of these and went a little crazy. Normally he doesn't eat anything that has granola in it, that would mean that it is slightly healthy and he goes through his phases where he wants to "eat clean" then about six weeks later the damn breaks and he's face down in Little Debbie snack cakes and half gallons of cheap ice cream. He killed a box of these over the course of about 14 hours; he tried them with sliced up bananas, peaches and even strawberries and really loved it. Well, that was until his stomach started making strange noises and he was camped out in the bathroom. Suffice it to say, a bowl of two of this isnt going to hurt you but an entire box, well, you might be in trouble.
Normally this sells for about $3.50 a box so it isn't something that I buy unless I have coupons for it and its on sale. In this case I couldnt pass up two dollars a box and I didnt have any coupons [but I don't think Rite Aid accepts them anyway]. A half cup serving contains 180 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 37 grams of carbohydrates [10 from sugar] and 4 grams of protein. The biggest perk nutritionally is the 5 grams of dietary fiber and 30 grams of whole grains that you get per serving. It might take you a little while to get used to the taste of this if you have been eating sugary cereals or hot oatmeal that has fruits or sugar added to it but it isn't impossible. Swapping this out for a 'junk food' cereal in the morning will give you a little extra energy and provide you with some necessary vitamins and minerals as well as wholesome 'good carbs' that will help you keep going until lunch.
The Bottom Line
I'm not a tree hugger. I try to recycle whenever I can. I drive and SUV that pollutes the air and wastes gas. I dont fit the usual mold of someone that sings the praises of a cereal like this but here I am telling anyone that's made it this far into the review that this is a damn good cereal that is damn good for you. I still have to laugh at the actual heftiness of the box; seeing someone pick it up for the first time is always hysterical. "Wow, that really is heavy!" is usually what they say. If you are looking to add a wholesome cereal to your daily meal plan or are like me and have to snack when on the computer, this is a good pick. Sure, the calories can add up if you sit there shoveling it down but a few handfuls here and there will keep your metabolism going, fill you up and give you some extra dietary fiber.
