sweet-indigo's Full Review: C. S. Lewis - Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia
This Narnia book is a bit more of a fantasy epic than its predecessor - giving the rightful king his throne, reclaiming the land for righteousness... you get the idea. This is probably my least favorite book in the series, but that's not saying much, and there still is plenty to recommend it. Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are back, thrown into Narnia, the mysterious mythological-type country they had already visited in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It's by complete surprise as they are meant to be waiting for their trains back to school.
Sounds tempting already - the mere thought of abandoning school for Narnia! The beginning of the book is full of intrigue - why are they back in Narnia, and where is it that they have been so rudely deposited by what or whomever brought them there. What's more, all the magic of the place seems to have disastrously departed. Finding themselves back in the ruined castle where they had once reigned as kings and queens, the Pevensies meet Trumpkin the dwarf. He tells them the story of Prince Caspian, really the rightful king, who seeks to restore Aslan, the great Lion, who is King of Kings, and bring peace back to oppressed Narnia. But Caspian's uncle has usurped the throne and is trying to kill him.
After hearing of this, the Pevensies set out to restore Caspian his throne. The plot is a lot to do with talking, and there's a lot of traveling, which is nice but maybe a little too long. There's not so much in the way of plot-related action as in the other books, but the action that there is is good (a duel, lots of that lovely 'restoration of the good' stuff) and Aslan, as always, is moving and challenging.
And as with every book, there are plenty of fresh and appealing characters.
