Livn4Jesus's Full Review: Michael R. Eades M.D. - Protein Power
I love just about everything that has carbohydrates! Rice, bread, potatoes, corn, popcorn, the list could go on and on. However, in spite of this, Protein Power explained the high-protein/low-carbohydrate plan* in a way that made it easy for even me to follow. The authors, both medical doctors, explain different feelings you might have while on the plan and why. The authors also include a way to calculate your ideal body weight. The calculation is based mostly on lean body mass, which makes it more accurate. Vitamins, nutrients and potassium (which of them your body needs, how much it needs and why it needs them) are also discussed in depth in this book.
In Part 1 - Assessing Your Risk, the authors explain how they came up with this plan and why it works. It is also in this part of the book that insulin is discussed heavily. I will warn you that there is a lot of medical information to read through and at times it is very dry, but it contains very useful things to know especially if you have any medical problems. I personally had to push myself through this part in order to get to what I really wanted to know, which was how to get started. The plan is explained in depth in Part 2 - The Protein Power Plan. It is broken into three steps. The first step is Phase 1 intervention (30 grams of carbs a day or less). This is the starting point for people with medical problems and/or more than 20% of their body weight to lose. The second step is Phase 2 intervention (55 grams of carbs a day or less). This is the starting point for people with less than 20% of their body weight to lose and also where people who completed Phase 1 go. The final step is Maintenance (grams of carbs per day is individualized). This is where everyone eventually ends up. Also in Part 2, exercise and motivation are discussed and it is here that you will learn how to design your own food plan. It will be based on activity level and several other factors. There are also sample menus, a ton of recipes, and a Q & A area in this section of the book. Part 3 - Why Will This Plan Leave You Healthy and Thin is the final part of the book. Once again we get into medical information and once again I recommend that you stick with it until the end. It is in this part that the authors discuss Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease, Cholesterol, and much, much more.
The success stories I read about in Part 2 of the book made me very anxious to get started, but I managed to hold out until I finished reading Protein Power. The first couple of days were hard, because I was having cravings for all my carb loaded foods, but once I got towards the end of my first week I no longer craved them like I had. I love that I don't have to fully cut carbohydrates out of my diet, I just have to refrain from consuming an excessive amount of them. Also, I found myself enjoying things like eggs, bacon, cheese, mayonnaise, real butter, and peanut butter, while losing weight! These had always been forbidden on the diets I had gone on in the past. Also, on those diets I was always hungry, but with this plan I can eat high-protein/low-carb snacks whenever I want. The hardest thing for me is making sure I am drinking 8 glasses of water each day. I like to drink things with a little more flavor, so every now and then I buy myself calorie free, carb free, flavored carbonated water.
Protein Power isn’t the most exciting thing I have ever read, in fact it was more like I was reading a medical journal at times than a weight loss book, but it has certainly changed how I eat, how I look at food, and how much I weigh. It is a must read for people wanting do something about how they look and feel.
*Please note that this is called a plan not a diet, because it is a new way of eating for the rest of your life, not just until you lose the weight you want.
