Pros: Refreshing, subtle but excellent flavor
Cons: Ask for the lemon on the side
The Bottom Line: A nice wheat refresher, and widely available. Give it a try without the lemon first.

| andaryl's Full Review: Pyramid Hefeweizen |
At the end of my shift last night I was about to sit down with a Chicken Picatta. I’ve spent the last couple of months at work drinking Sam Adams Winter, Guinness or our own branded unfiltered amber, but none of these would have complemented a light dish so I had to go for something different. That left me with the choice of Bud, Coors, Miller, Heineken, Morretti and of course Hefeweizen.
I hadn’t tried Hefeweizen for some time but this seemed perfect for chicken in a light buttery caper sauce. I’d only drunk it before as a summer thirst quencher and taken everyone else’s advice in squeezing a lemon in there. This time I decided to check out the flavors of the beer itself.
The beer pours to a pale golden color, beautifully foamy, with a good white head of foam. It’s actually unfiltered which makes for a very cloudy body. Now my understanding of Hefeweizen had always been that they were pretty flavorless, which is probably true at 45F, and for that reason the lemon is used to add flavor. This time though I managed to get mine in a warm glass and let it sit around for a while, which resulted in a much more pleasant experience.
The nose is very subtle, with just a hint of yeast and sweetness. The taste however is excellent. It’s light and smooth on the palate while crisp and refreshing. Initially you get the wheat in the beer, but later, as the beer opens up there’s a very good caramel maltiness, which I had never noticed before. I would certainly have never categorized this as a sweet beer until now. There’s only a little bitterness in the finish, but the aftertaste is very pleasing and refreshing.
As a World Beer Championship Silver Medal winner this is an excellent brew with a very pleasing flavor. It worked perfectly with the Chicken Picatta, but I’d have to try a few more dishes before I could make further meal recommendations. It’s a great brew for the light beer drinker, and an easy drink to swallow. Fans of darker, or hoppy beers may not find this one challenging enough, but I would recommend anyone to give it a try.
