njchicaa's Full Review: Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension 16oz 1 Pint
We run a small cat and dog rescue out of our home. At any given time we have between 5 and 7 kittens/cats and up to 6 dogs/puppies. They come to us as strays or from the shelter and it is a guaranteed fact that they will have kennel cough, mange, a respiratory infection, coccidia, or an assortment of worms. We keep a variety of "remedies" for those things on hand, including Pyrantel Pamoate to deal with hookworms and round worms.
About This Product
Pyrantel Pamoate is an opaque yellow suspension that is used to remove roundworms and hookworms from cats, dogs, and even humans. (It does not remove whipworms or tapeworms.) It works by temporarily paralyzing the worms in the intestinal tract which causes them to lose their grip and be passed out along with undigested waste in feces. Pyrantel is not well-absorbed by the host animal's intestine, so they are unaffected by this paralyzing agent.
Pyrantel Pamoate does not kill worm eggs or juvenile worms. It only kills those in the intestinal tract, so you need to use this product every two weeks for up to three or four applications. You use 1mL per 10 pounds of body weight and squirt it into the animal's mouth with a syringe. A prescription is not required for this product, so you can either get it from your vet, at farm supply stores, or online at various retailers. (It is also sold under Strongid and Nemex brand names.) For people with only one or two pets, it is probably more cost-effective to just get the doses that you need from your vet. With our revolving door of fosters, I always keep a bottle of Pyrantel on hand.
You need to shake this stuff well before use. I always decant some into a small bowl before filling up the syringes so as not to contaminate the whole bottle. Do not pour out much more than you need, though, because Pyrantel is photosensitive and will break down in the presence of light. You can't easily store extra product that you've decanted from the bottle due to the photosensitivity.
Our Experience With Pyrantel
I've been using Pyrantel Pamoate for years with no problems. It has a vanilla flavor which is not something that I'd ever expect animals to enjoy, but most of them happily gulp it down. I know that it works because, unfortunately, I've seen hundreds of worms expelled over the years by animals who have been treated with this dewormer. Trust me, I'll never look at spaghetti the same way again.
Some people may not feel comfortable treating this kind of pet issue by themselves without input from their vet, but Pyrantel is what my vet uses as a dewormer and he has given me both the dosage information and his blessing to deal with it on my own and save myself the cost of the office visit.
Overall Opinion
Pyrantel Pamoate is an effective dewormer that this animal rescue always keeps on hand. It is reasonably priced, easy to obtain (no prescription required!), palatable to animals, and very effective in knocking out hookworms and roundworms.
