San Francisco is one of my favorite cities, so I spent two days there for my recent birthday. The Radisson Hotel turned out to be an excellent hotel choice, with its beautiful view of the San Francisco Bay and easy access to many of the city's best attractions.
Location
The Radisson's major selling point is its location, literally steps away from Pier 39. In fact, it has its own keyed hallway entrance to and from the wharf and stairway access to Jefferson St. from the second level parking lot.
From the outdoor second level parking lot, you definitely get a great view of Fisherman's Wharf down below, a direct look out into the San Francisco Bay, and an excellent unobstructed view of Alcatraz Island. At night, you can subtly hear the sea lions that sleep in the docks at Pier 39.
From the Radisson, you can literally walk across the street to Pier 39, down the street to the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square, or take the trolley to any other San Francisco neighborhood.
Room
Although it has been recently renovated, this three-story Radisson still isn't very impressive and shows its age. The room is basic, with a king size bed, wardrobe, desk with leather chair, a chaise lounge, and basic bathroom with shower curtains for the bathtub/shower. Other necessities included an iron/ironing board, blowdryer, and coffee maker. The tv included cable and Nintendo. The room was decorated in attractive dark, neutral tones.
Because the hotel is environmentally friendly, they request that you reuse. Therefore, the maid won't change your sheets or provide you with new towels unless you specifically request it. Check in time is 3:00 PM, and check out time is 12:00 PM.
Amenities
The Radisson does not have its own restaurant, but it does provide a menu book of many restaurants that do deliver. Even so, why do "take-out" when there are plenty of interesting restaurants within walking distance? Many of these restaurants specialize in fresh seafood entrees.
The parking rate for hotel guests is $15/day, which is actually competitive for this area. Even after you check out, the parking pass is good for 24 hrs from the time you purchased it. Other services include laundry, a 24-hr fitness room, a heated outdoor pool, and conference rooms.
Service
None of the employees seemed disgruntled, and many were helpful when needed. We requested a non-smoking room and, without being asked, the guy at registration pleasantly offered to change our room if we weren't satisfied with the one he checked us into. The hotel did make an error in charging us an extra day's parking, but the woman at registration was quick and pleasant at reversing the charge when we explained the situation.
Overall Thoughts
The Radisson is definitely one of the best hotels at Fisherman's Wharf. Everything is within walking distance, or easily accessible. The price is competitive for the area, at around $100/night. If you book on Expedia.com, the current rate is $89, whereas a similar room would cost $125 directly at the Radisson's web site.
