psyonik's Full Review: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six for Nintendo 64
I've become disenchanted with N64 lately (see my reviews of Pokemon Snap and Super Smash Bros.). The only seriously cool game they had released, in my opinion, was Goldeneye. But now they come back with Rainbow Six, proving that they are not completely trapped in the kiddy market.
Rainbow Six, based on the novel by Tom Clancy, has you as a anti-terrorist squad in various situations, trying to free hostages and the like. It is a first person shooter, vaguely reminiscent of Goldeneye, where you can zoom and shoot at the bad guys.
But the beauty of Rainbow Six is in how it does NOT resemble such games as Goldeneye or first person PC shooters like Unreal. The idea is not to go in and shoot as many bullets as you can into anything that moves. You can't take a million hits, and there are no life restores. In fact, in Rainbow Six, one bullet and you are down, or dead. Just like real life. That's why Rainbow Six is so cool: to negotiate through a hostage situation, you have to use stealth and teamwork, and non-traditional weapons like Flashbang grenades. Instead of controlling one guy, you control four, and have to strategically maneuver them into position.
The graphics are nothing special, but the realism and strategy neccessary make Rainbow Six the best game I have ever played on the N64. Rarely is thinking neccessary in a shooter, in Rainbow Six it is vital. If you are looking for a game that taxes your wits as well as your skill with the controller, Rainbow Six is it.
