Plat_Ryda's Full Review: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six for Nintendo 64
Note: The most important parts of this review are in bold.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 for Nintendo 64 is not your average enter-a-building-and-kill-everybody-inside first person shooter game. No way, it is definitely more complicated than that.
The first thing that separates Rainbow 6 from the other first person shooter games out there is that it requires a lot of strategy, and that it doesn't have many people to kill, but instead, many people to save from being killed. If you're looking for a hardcore shooter game, like Goldeneye, then this isn't it.
In this game, if you don't have some sort of plan on what you're going to do, then you're bound to end up absolutely nowhere. Every single door has to be opened with extreme caution, because there may be a villain inside, or there may be a villain inside keeping hostages that you must save, and if you run in and shoot, the hostages will be killed.
It is a very realistic game, and everything you do has an effect, unlike many other games. If you throw a grenade at a door, the door will be destroyed, and anybody that is too close to the grenade will be destroyed along with the door.
The main goal of this game on the levels is basically to get rid of the terrorists that have invaded the area, and save any innocent person while doing that. One little mistake could result in one of those terrorists opening fire on the innocent people that you must save.
Not only does this game require strategy, but it also requires skill. You really have to be like a spy throughout all of the game. In certain areas you can't walk too fast, or you may be noticed, or you can't make too much noise, either. Not only do you have to be careful when opening doors and entering new rooms, but you have to be very careful when turning corners in hallways, because there might be a villain standing ready in the corner.
Another thing that separates Rainbow 6 from the other shooter games, is your limited amount of ammo and choice of weapons. You don't get much ammo to use, so you can't waste any. You can only use it when needed. Then, the choice of weapons and things. There are many different guns to choose from, and there are even things such as the Lockpick Kit and Electronics Kit.
A bad thing about this game, though, is that in some of the larger levels, you can be lost and opening random doors and hoping that it might lead you somewhere, but it just leads you back to the beginning or loops you in a circle. This can become very annoying.
Now onto some technical issues.
The graphics in Rainbow 6 are great and very realistic. The gun animation is as realistic as you can get, and the characters are very well designed.
The sound is amazing, and plays a large role in Rainbow 6. It also adds the element of fear to the game. In some places, there might be no music at all, just the ticking of a clock in the distance. And, when you are searching for terrorists and hostages, the music can become very loud when you are about to open a door, or are going downstairs into the basement, and then, when you least expect it, a terrorist pops up and the music explodes into a pumped up beat which suits the scene perfectly. The weapon noises are very realistic, too, ranging from the 9mm being loaded and cocked, down to the sound of you or your teammate picking the lock on a door.
The controls are, well, OK. They are a little awkward, especially for certain things, such as moving, which uses the C-buttons. It usually takes a while to learn all the controls and then get used to them. It could take about a half hour to an hour to get used to them.
A very cool feature that I liked in this game was how you can choose what weapons, gadgets, and even clothes you and your teammates are going to use on a level. There are also tons of outfits you can choose from, and there is always one that best fits a certain level. You can give each person a different set of weapons and clothes, or you can give everyone the same thing.
Overall, this is a very good game, but, if you're thinking that it's one of those games where all you do is shoot and kill everything, then you are in for one big surprise. It is also much more difficult than many of the other shooter games. And, even though this is mainly a one-player game, I highly recommend that you play cooperative instead of single, because it makes the missions easier and more playable.
