KMINER's Full Review: Rival RC101 10-Cup Rice Cooker
Over the course of 2002 a lot of our appliances and/or kitchen items broke or died. So it was quite easy for family to know what to get us this past holiday - kitchen items! One of the items we asked for was a new rice cooker. The one we had was an Aroma 7 Cup Cooker that we got from my parents - we all used it for many years, and then it up and died. And yes, I have to have a rice cooker - I hate boil in a bag rice, and grew up on using a rice cooker in my home - I seem to notice the difference. And since rice is one of my favorite side dishes to eat, I naturally want it just the way I like it. So we left it wide open to my parents on what kind to buy, and have been happily pleased with their selection of the Rival Rice Cooker, 10 cup.
Features Of the Rival Rival Rice Cooker, 10 cup
It came in a nice easy to open to box, already assembled and with a short, 10 page Instruction book. This comes with:
a stainless steel cover steaming rack (for veggies) we have not used this an inner pot of anodized aluminum - markings inside for water amounts if needed heating base - white with handles, control lever and indicator lights plastic measuring cup rice paddle
We ditched the measuring cup, it was cheap and flimsy and we have plenty of nice measuring cups here. Ditto with the cheap rice paddle - we already have plenty of spoons that work great. The steaming rack went in the cupboard somewhere (I have other methods for steaming veggies) - so basically we are left with the cover, inner pot, and giant white heating base with attached cord.
The base is wide and durable, with a footed bottom to help keep stable. The handles on either side make it really easy to pick the whole thing up and carry right to the table to serve out of. Though the inner pot can be pulled out, it gets hot and I wouldn't advise doing so. Either serve right from the pot, or scoop it out into another dish.
Using The Rice Cooker
What a breeze. Just put the inner pot into the base. Scoop out the desired rice, add water, cover. Plug into the wall. Automatically the Warm light comes on, letting you know the device is starting to warm up. Press down the only control lever, and the Cook light comes on. This device automatically stops cooking when finished, and switches back to warm. Just let the rice sit about 15 minutes, remove the lid, and serve! Perfect rice every time. Can't serve right away? That's ok, because this product will keep your rice warm for 6-8 hours (though the most we have left it is maybe 45 minutes).
Measuring is a breeze - you double the amount of (cold) water for each cup of rice you have - for example, 1 cup of rice needs 2 cups of water, 2 cups of rice needs 4 cups of water, 1/2 cup of rice needs 1 cup of water. A little more water is needed for brown rice, and you quadruple the ratio for any wild rice. You can make as little, or as much as you need - up to 11 cups of cooked rice (so 5 1/2 cups of un-cooked rice). (All the ratios are in the Instruction book, along with ratios for many common vegetables)
Cleaning Up Is Breeze
The Rival Rice Cooker, 10 cup takes little effort. Just pull the inner pot out of the base, soak, and wash. So long as you soak the rice soon after you are finished with the meal, is washes right out. Same with the cover. The base can be washed down with a damp sponge - but do not submerge or wet it much. We have yet for it to get dirty and need any cleaning.
Then Storing
It is kind of big and bulky and the cord hangs out which annoys me. I store mine on a shelf on my microwave cart - it takes up about half my shelf. It's certainly not cute or decorative to look at, but it looks nice enough that it does not detract from the kitchen.
Hints
Again, use cold water when cooking. Also, do not use metal utensils inside the pot - plastic and/or wooden is fine. Put on the cover. And stop lifting it up to peer inside. Do not stir it, touch it, etc.
Final Thoughts
Using the Rival Rice Cooker, 10 cup is a breeze and this family wouldn't be without it!
