Freak369's Full Review: Roseart Rose Art Curves Black Ink Ballpoint Pen wi...
The back to school sales saw us hitting a lot of different stores with coupons and several homeschooling events for free backpacks and supplies. When the co-op that Annabelle attends a few days a week had packages made up for all the registered students she was head over heels about getting a pink and purple backpack with lots of supplies inside. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree in her case, she's starting to show a rather weird and freakish attraction towards pens, markers and other office supplies. The three pack of RoseArt Curves pens were something she wasn't the least bit interested in. If it isn't purple or pink she's not into it. I don't want to have to be the one to tell her that when she starts back to classes at the co-op she's going to have to use black or blue ink.
RoseArt Curves Great Grip Ball Point Pens
RoseArt products are often clumped in with the generic school supplies. There's nothing wrong with them but they aren't as cool as Crayola. These are a little outside the boundaries of crayons and colored pencils and for a general pen they aren’t half bad but if you need them to take notes or plan on doing a lot of writing with them, chances are you are going to be disappointed. There's nothing too terribly wrong with the pens but they aren't of the same quality as PaperMate, Bic and Sharpie. The Curves have a nice appearance but its all plastic; the barrels are strong but the clips break easily. I used these for about two weeks before I turfed them off to the guys at the shop. The last time I checked there was only one [out of three] that were still working.
Curves are part of the Great Grips series from RoseArt, they also have mechanical pencils for the 2008 school season but they look nothing like the pens. Why are they called 'Curves'? Because there are some small curves to the body of the pen. Don't get too excited, they don't do anything to improve writing or to reduce hand stress and fatigue. Suffice it to say, the curves are there for looks only. The rubber comfort grip area is large and there are some divots in the grip but I have to be honest here, this isn't something that you are going to enjoy writing with for long periods of time. For shopping lists, phone messages or quick notes they are fine but you aren't going to want to sit through a long winded lecture with one of these. To give credit where credit is due, the barrels are strong and none of them cracked, that's more than what I can say for the pocket clips. They will snap easily if you try to clip them on to anything thicker than a notebook cover or backpack pen loop.
Annabelle's pack was medium point with black ink; so far all I have seen these come in is black ink so I have no idea if the made them in blue or red. The ink does dry fast so smudging isn't a problem with if you are writing on anything but an extremely smooth surface like loose leaf or notebook paper you will get skipping. That's kind of odd because even the cheaper roller ball pens from other companies will write on pretty much any type of paper without that many issues of skipping. They are medium point so it isn't an ink flow problem so I've narrowed it down to a cheap roller ball system or an overall defect in the ball housing. That might sound like I am overanalyzing things but if a company is going to put out a product they should at least make sure that it works properly before they do so.
Since these were included in her backpack they were free; online they are selling for $1.29 to $.159 but I'm sure that if you hit Target or Wal-Mart you will be able to find them for a couple cents cheaper. They aren't the worst pens that I have ever used but unless they redesign them or change the ball point features of it, I won’t buy these in the future. They look nice but they are made of plastic not metal so that's part of the reason they are on the less expensive side of things. If all you need is something to write quick notes with or to have near the phone then you won't be disappointed with Curves. On notebook and loose leaf they write nice but given the below average feel of the comfort grip they aren't something that I would buy for a student or someone that is going to need to do a lot of writing.
