Pros: Excellent crisp, permanent print. Gold and silver foil is outstanding. PC or MAC
Cons: Very slow output, image degrades as printer wears.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this printer to any one looking for good, quality prints. It's not too good for color printing in the work environment because of the slow print speeds.

| twisted_pair's Full Review: Alps MD 2010 Thermal Transfer Printer |
I purchased this printer as a means to make permanent prints and t-shirt transfers that would last through the washing machine.
I decided on the Alps MD-2010 because it was in the $300 price range and the ink is very inexpensive ($4.50 / color)
This printer uses a unique Micro-Dry process to heat and transfer toner to a page. It supports a wide range of paper stock and thickness and even prints great on black paper.
Unfortunately, it makes a "print pass" to lay toner on the page for each color and being a four-color printer CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) this can take some time.
For each pass, the printer draws the paper in, prints that color and backs the page up for the next color. Amazingly, the printer maintains alignment during the four passes and doesn't overlap or miss.
Another exciting bonus was the Foil ink, for roughly twice the cost of a standard color you can get reflective foil colors including gold and silver. This foil print looks so impressive I've started printing my own business cards with some foil colors.
The printer works well on a PC or Mac and has an optional USB interface. I have it on a corporate network and allow others to print to it over the network. It is definitely a work horse that just won't quit, I've ran thousands of pages through it and have yet to have it jam (NO KIDDING)
Another nice feature is the "out of ink recovery", if a color runs out the printer stops, alerts you of the missing color and then resumes printing after you have replaced it. Like I said A WORK HORSE!
The installation is painless and the driver software is easy to use and powerful. Windows 2000 also has built in support for this printer.
If you don't mind waiting for excellent output and permanent print including t-shirt iron on's you'll love this printer.
