| mfrost9133's Full Review: Nikon Coolscan III Film Scanner (35 mm) |
The Nikon Coolscan III, sometimes referred to as the LS-30, is an outstanding choice for the user who wants to print files created from film sources. This film scanner provides resolutions compatible with printing 8x10, and perhaps larger.
I am using this scanner with a Macintosh G3 but it will work equally well with Macintosh or Windows platforms. The LS-30 uses a high-speed SCSI interface for connection to computers running Mac OS System 7.1 or later, Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 4.0 or later.
I purchased my scanner new for $900-$1000 but they are now available as reconditioned equipment from the factory for about $400-$500. I made this purchase two years ago because I had thousands of 35mm slides which I wanted to be able to print.
The scanner comes with an excellent users guide (hard copy) in English, French and Spanish which can easily get one started. In addition, there is a complete manual available on CD-ROM.
The adapters available for this scanner can be changed while the scanner is turned on. This is convenient when switching from scanning slides to scanning strips of negative film.
The scanner driver software provided with this scanner offers sophisticated pre-scan editing of images, including precise color correction, contrast, and brightness adjustment.
For the user who isn't willing (or able) to pay the top-of-the-line price for Nikon's other scanners, this is an excellent choice. After two years of use I do not need to step up to a higher-priced model. The LS-30 has done everything I hoped it would.
