| hubgearfan's Full Review: D-link DFE 905 4-Port Ethernet Hub |
I'm using this hub kit with a 3 home computer workgroup (two Windows 2000 and one Windows 98) – this hub kit immediately paid itself. Using Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) I am able to connect all 3 computers to the Internet at the same time so there's no squabbling amongst the kids about whose turn it is. I was contemplating buying another modem until I read about Windows ICS – this hub kit was half the price of a modem.
The whole family is now able to share the printers and scanner, a color ink jet is connected to one computer, a laser to another computer and the scanner to the third computer and they can all be used from any of the computers. As well as sharing resources, I am able to backup the data on each computer onto another computer which saves a lot of time and money incase of disaster and I have actually had to use a backup once.
The network was very easy to set up, the NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers are found from Windows so you don’t even have to set anything up, just insert the network adapters and Plug and Play takes care of the rest.
The only negative thing I have to say about this kit is that the hub is very noisy – it makes as much noise as a large cooling fan. Also one of the ports no longer works but I suspect it was caused by a thunderstorm.
Feel free to email me at: cts@surfeu.fi (I won't be around until August though...)
