This burner has caused me unending grief (Reply to this comment)
by KnightRT
It was installed on my Dell 4100 by default. Doesn't work AT ALL under Windows 2000. Hates anything even resembling budget media. Has yet to burn ANYTHING at 8X successfully.
I've discovered errors in Nero that don't even appear in the help manual's list of possible errors.
It worked alright initially with Window 98, but it's gotten to the point where it's begun to screw up in that environment as well. Switched it out for a Philips, that one doesn't seem to like my system either. Go figure.

Probably got a broken one. (Reply to this comment)

Did you ever get to try another one of these, or order a replacement? I would assume that you had a lemon of a burner. Although I don't think that it is a particularly good CD burner, we had one at my old job that burned many CDs successfully using the included Adaptec software. I own a SCSI plextor burner (and reader) myself, but usually trust Sony hardware as being at least functional.

CRX's are picky. (Reply to this comment)
by serena21
I don't know why they are so picky, but they are. I know that you know what you are doing, but usually they are good drives. Someone that I work with actually owns this drive and never had a problem with it. Make sure you have the latest busmastering updates if you aren't running an intel chipset. Try it with nothing else loading (I know you have 512 MB of Memory). If it's still not working, then e-mail or call tech support. http://sony.storagesupport.com If you are running ME on the system, then you probably need the update for CD extreme. If you still aren't having luck, let me know and I can see what I can find out.

The worst, huh? (Reply to this comment)

But your review was oh-so-amusing, Peter--so for that reason, I'm glad you bought this Sony CD (NOT!) Burner. The funniest line was concerning your using it for another coaster:).
Thanks for such an entertaining review!

Not sure if this will help, but..... (Reply to this comment)
by jeffs320
Let me start by saying that I really despised these burners when I worked for Sony. I was really happy when we stopped supporting them, and was quite annoyed when we started supporting Canadian peripherals, to include these drives.
I have read enough reviews you have written to know that you know what you are doing, so won't patronize you with "Have you tried this" questions.
HOWEVER, might I add one note to this, and it is that Adaptec Easy CD Creator works very well with the drive as far as I have seen. Also, if I remember correctly, there are quite a few programs that really have issues with these burners, so it might save you some time and headaches to *gasp* call Sony.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!
I know, we all despise tech support, but at this point it probably couldn't hurt, right?
Hope it all works out for you - it might actually be a defective drive, too...??

Hi Peter (Reply to this comment)
by sarajohn
This is a great review...You have probably tried everything in the trouble shooting arena....but, I just wanted to let you know....
I have a Compaq Presario 7360 Which I now love...however...in the beginning there were many problems....for instance it did not recognize some important parts of programs that were needed to run my computer....come to find out there were things that need to have a fix it disk that only the company could send me....this was hard to find out.....until I finally got a helpful customer service person....then they sent me the fix it disk.....now my computer and I live happily ever after.....hope this helps....maybe even the CD burner customer service could have a fix it disk also.
If not, I wish you the best and I enjoy your writings even though so many of them are so advanced that I don't understand them...but they all are a teaching experience for me, so thanks for all the sharing....
God Bless

Wow, this is funny. Some of the SONY recorders and players are horrible. My husband works with some guys who were just complaining about them.
Great review, as always,

Good Review (Reply to this comment)
by britguy
I have a TDK burner myself, but as pipet suggests, maybe you could benefit from using Nero, or CloneCD. The other one that I use is CDRwin. I've never had a problem using these programs, and my machine is less powerful than your Compaq!
I would have thought that Sony's stuff would fair better, but I guess we all know now.

about the Spressa from others, too. I have a Plextor that I love... Nero likes it & so does Clone CD. Hope you get a better burner!
