Hi,
I bought this laptop as a student in summer 2001. I picked out this model for its lightweight primarily, and also because i trust SONY as a brand.
I have used this laptop excessively for pretty much all my needs in grad school and my job thereafter.
The battery life was never adequate from the very beginning. I have had to use the power plug at all times, with the battery still attached.
Just a few weeks ago, after owning it for about 3 years, my laptop started having power issues.
Here is the sequence of events.
1. Will not start after i shut it down.
2. I figured that if i let it sit for a little while and leave the power plug unplugged, and then plug it back in after about 5 minutes - it worked.
3. This way of starting it worked for about 3 weeks.
4. Then, I took out the battery and left it detached and used only the power plug as i have described in #2.
5. It would start with this method. And i was able to start it in this way for about 9-10 weeks.
6. But as of today, it just wont start. It has been at least a week since i have been trying to get it to start. The indicators on the LED panel in the front glow for about 2 seconds, but there is not other movement.
7. I brought this to the university computer store and they told me it is a motherboard issue. And the motherboard needs to be changed. They said i would need to send it to SONY.
8. I then called SONY, they suggested the exact same things that i had figured out with trial and error. They said i need to send it in and it can cost anything depending on what they diagnose.
9. I have been reading the postings on Google groups. It seems like i am not the only one facing this problem with this particular model.
So far, after having spent about $75 on trying to get the problem diagnosed, I have not figured out a solution and i am undecided whether i should spend on getting this laptop fixed or should i just buy a new one.
I really love this laptop, so it is a tough decision.
The reason i wrote this review is not just to make you aware of such an issue but also highlight how well this laptop has served me while it has worked.
I hope this helps in making your decision.
