Pros: Smooth and fast, never crashes, very light and portable. A great price too!
Cons: Display is OK, but not as crisp as some (much more expensive)models.
The Bottom Line: It's a great entry level laptop, but wait for the killer deals (don't pay more than $700 for laptop alone).

While surfing the web I came across this laptop as part of a refurbished combo with a color printer, leather carrying case, and power inverter (car adapter). Whoa...just $750! I had been watching the market for an entry level laptop, but couldn't find a decent one for under $1000. My new 12XL300 fired up right away, no glitches or crashes at all. It came refurbished, but directly from Compaq so I knew it was safe to get a refurbished product. However, I was hesitant to go to the Windows Me Operating System because I had heard rumors about instability, but it has proven to be quite stable so far.
The Celeron 600 is plenty fast for me, and I added 64 more MByte of SDRAM (fast! 100MHz) for a total of 128 MByte and my total bill was $895. This laptop is very light, and compact...yet Compaq has managed to cram tons of features inside the smallest space. Like the 3.5" floppy and 20X CD-ROM, modem, 6GB hard drive, 2 USB ports, serial printer port, external mouse port, headphone and microphone jack, bass-ported & amplified JBL speakers. And of course the credit card-sized PCMCIA slot where you can add any accessory you desire, like a network card, wireless modem, etc. The built-in mouse works OK. My next addition is an external CD-RW drive, which can plug right in one of the USB ports, then a network card for the PCMCIA slot.
