briandalsmom's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 9000n Printer
WHY HP?
I work for a company of nearly 300 employees. With so many departments and nothing standardized, the IS department put its foot down about 2 years ago and made the bold statement that if any department bought a printer other than an HP printer, they would be on their own. The IS department firmly believed HP had the best printers on the market.
My department had figured that out years before, already having an HP8500DN for color laser printing, and several HP DeskJets. When we needed a production laser printer for black & white only, we shopped around and decided the HP9000n would fit in perfectly.
Our department is responsible for Utility Billing and Business & Occupation Taxes so our printing needs are feast or famine. Several days a month we must have the ability to print 3,000-7,000 items in one day. The HP9000n fits the need perfectly.
There are other 9000 models; however, we needed a printer that could be networked for all users in the department over the current infrastructure. This printer produces up to 300,000 pages monthly at a speed of 50 pages per minute. Its not only fast, its quick to start printingno long drawn out warming up process, the first page prints in 8 seconds.
PAPER HANDLING / EXTRAS
There are tons of optionsit comes with 3 paper trays (two standard 500-sheet input trays, standard 100-sheet multi-purpose input tray) but you can add a fourth (2000) to increase the capacity for $921.
It doesnt have a special envelop feeder, but you can put up to 10 envelopes at a time in tray 1 (multi-purpose input tray). It can also be reformatted to a duplex printer (prints on both sides) for an additional $423. We declined this option as our color printer has this featureit is very slow and since our bills are one sided, we didnt need to expend the additional fee. Of course, theres always the manual way to duplexsend it through and print side one. Replace the paper upside down in the feeder tray and print side two.
Other extras you can add on are a 3,000-sheet stacker ($2,062), a 3,000-sheet stapler/stacker ($2,299), or an extra 5GB hard drive.
Another plus is the 11x17 paper capabilitywe do a lot of large spreadsheets and couldnt do it with a printer that didnt allow for the larger sizes.
MEMORY / TYPEFACES
I comes with 64MB of memory; however, can purchase additional memory up to 384 MB. The memory is added to the 3 100-pin DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Modules) sockets. It has 80 scalable True Type Fonts preinstalled, and can print PostScript Level 3 emulation. Additional memory is usually needed when using the printer for larger filesgraphics, logos, etc.
We purchased the standard package and havent found a need yet for the additional memory.
CONNECTIVITY
It comes standard with the following: IEEE 1284-compliant parallel interface, 2 open EIO slots, HP Jetdirect EIO internal print server for Fast Ethernet 10/100Base-TX in 1 EIO slot
However, it can be configured as follows: HP Jetdirect 600n, 610n, 615n, and 680n EIO internal print servers, HP Jetdirect 300x, 500x, and 170x external print servers, Connectivity Card for Serial, LocalTalk, and USB connectivity
We are a PC shop so the fact that it is NOT Macintosh compatible was not a problem for us, but something to consider before buying.
QUALITY
The quality is outstandinglaser printing with 600x600 dpi (dot per inch). Weve owned this particular printer for nearly 2 years and so far weve had absolutely no problems with it. It has run jam-free and maintenance-free for all this time. We do care for it as recommended in the toner replacement cartridgeswith each change, there are instructions on how to care for the machine. Its super-easy to change consumables and clean the machineeverything is easily reached and drawings are used throughout the machine and in the instruction book to guide you in whatever needs you might have.
DIMENSIONS / WEIGHT / WARRANTY
Its on the larger size, which is necessary to handle the 11x17 paper. Actual dimensions are 29.8 wide x 24 deep x 24 high. It weighs a hefty 143.6 pounds. Ours came with next-day onsite advanced maintenance for one-year for hardware, accessories, and supplies, however, we never used itdidnt have the need.
CONSUMABLES
Now for the rest of the costthe amount it takes to run the printer. Ink cartridges are about $225 for 300,000 pages. Thats 8.33 cents per sheet, based on standard usagethis means if youre printing normal text pages, however, if youre printing photos or other documents which covers a great deal of the page, the cost will be higher. Approximately once a year (based on our usage) we need to put in a fuserthis is accomplished by purchasing a HP LaserJet 9000 Series Maintenance Kit, C9152A, for nearly $300.
SOFTWARE
The intelligent user interface is so self-explanatory; weve had no user problems. A picture of the printer is presented to the user and as options are selected, the picture changes to reflect them. Should the user experience a problem (such as the network being down), the printer sends a message to the user with the problem and a suggestion or two on how to resolve it. Youre able to track your job and remotely diagnose problems from your computer.
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you need a high-volume laser printer, thats networkable, and error-free, you may want to consider this printer.
