| Julesmom1's Full Review: Safety 1st Portable Bed Rail |
When I was shopping for safety products for my son, one of the items I was looking for included a bed rail. We were, at the time, still cosleeping with our son and we were concerned about him slipping out of bed and knocking his little noggin on the hardwood floor below.
Now up to this point my expertise in such equipment was little to none - having never had a child before it did not seem necessary to have such an item in my household. However, upon bringing my little bundle of joy home and learning subsequently how difficult it was to entice him into his crib for his slumbers, it became apparent to me that a bed rail was in order.
I consulted various resources prior to venturing forth to the store: Friends whom had used such a device, child safety books, the Internet, and magazines. The singular feature that kept repeating itself in my investigation was that of excellent safety.
Now, I mused, this seemed rather obvious: A bed rail SHOULD be safe. However, upon examining some of the rails on the market it appeared to me that indeed there some out there that did not fit the bill to my satisfaction. They seemed rather cumbersome, and knowing my lack of mechanical abilities, this did not attract me. If I could not get the darn thing to operate properly it would in turn not perform adequately and my son's safety could be compromised.
The one rail that seemed both convenient and easy to operate was the Safety First Portable Bed Rail. It had a nice mesh covering and padded sides and there was a satisfying "click" as the rail snapped up into position. It could not easily be dislodged and it fit firmly in between the mattress and the boxspring of my bed. It became clear to me that this was the rail of choice. If I could operate it, with my vast ineptitude, and it still remained steadfast in its design, it certainly was a winner.
I purchased the rail for about $20 at Toys R Us and brought it home and within moments of opening the box, I was able to install it properly. We subsequently used the rail every night while we co-slept with our son, assured in the knowledge that he would be prevented from accidentally falling out of bed.
When he finally was switched to his crib, I kept the rail on my bed for those times when he wanted to snuggle up for a quick nursing and nap. I plan to use the rail again when he moves to his "big boy" bed as well.
All in all, the low cost of the product certainly belies its real value: Priceless peace of mind.
