| DGodesky's Full Review: Samsung ML 1250 Laser Printer |
Updated March 2007. This printer is still going strong. About 2 months ago we had a paper feed problem but cleaning the rollers at the bottom of the feed cleared that up. Ideally, they would give us a way to change the wheels but they don't.
Updated June 2002. This Samsung printer is a great, low priced, a top performer. Printing is quiet, smooth and quick. We've owned it since January 2002. Not a single problem and I'm sure we've printed easily 3000 copies (6 reams of paper). I have never owned anything made by Samsung and now have to admit this is a top quality brand/product. After about 6 months of use, I'm sold on buying Samsung.
We purchased this printer ater finding that our new Windows XP computer did not support our existing laser printer driver. The printer comes with an easy to follow, poster size set of installation instructions. The driver install CD worked without any trouble or doubt on what to do. We've used the parallel cable hook up but there is a USB hook up available too. The brochure says it works with Mac computers OS 8.0 or higher and with Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000/ME too.
Paper discharge can be changed from top to bottom. Top discharge is smooth and trouble free, and does not roll the paper. This works fine and we don't expect to need the lower discharge (you change to lower discharge by flipping a switch on the front of the printer). I've never timed the printer, but it's 12 PPM rating seems correct once the paper starts moving; the first print of the day can have a 10 second delay, but everything after that is fairly quick, starting to print in 1-3 seconds.
Not the smallest laser I've used, but nearly the smallest. Fits in a pull out printer shelf in our computer desk which many lasers won't fit. Paper loads easily into a vertical slot at the back. This is a much smaller "footprint" than your typical HP printer.
Printer has all of the usual features, e.g., label and envelope printing, toner saver, test print. It has had no trouble handling pictures, web pages, adobe printing, etc.; memory included is 4 MB, which appears to be plenty for any printing we've sent to it so far.
The "toner save" print button lightens up the print; great for drafts and saving toner, but I have to say, we've gotten our 3000+ pages on one cartridge without ever using the toner save feature.
This is an energy star compliant printer that powers down and only leaves the front panel light on; this is nice because you don't need to remember to turn it on; it's always ready but not using power. Also, once powered up, this is a quiet unit; we use it in the family room around the TV and there have been no complaints about noise.
A really neat button is the "repeat & cancel" button; I only use it for repeat printing, but it's convenient and saves time when you've closed a file, or maybe even just need a copy or two of a final document.
This is a bargain, trouble-free laser. We intend to get additional ones for our children in college. Printing by laser is so much more economical than by ink jet, plus the quality can't be beat.
Purchased from Outpost.com, price was $249 less a $50 rebate for final cost just under $200 plus $10 shipping. Best of all, the printer comes with a spare second print cartridge; these cartridges can cost $60-$100 depending upon brand - a great deal that wasn't mentioned on the Outpost.com web site, but the box was marked with the free cartridge deal. We just replaced the printer cartridge and found the best deal at www.provantage.com. Provantage sells the original samsung cartridge for $52.99 which is $15 to $20 less than everyone else AND we received it the next day shipped from PA to MD.
