| bernie99's Full Review: San Miguel Pale Pilsen |
This review isn't about the San Miguel beer you are going to find here in the US. As fine as that beer is, one of the best you will find in America, it has been shipped half way around the world. It has to loose something during the trip. If you want to know what it has lost, go to the Philippines and open a bottle.
My first experience with San Miguel beer was while I was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War, around 1971. Every month a C-130 cargo plane loaded with San Miguel would arrive on base. Within a week it was gone! We never ran out of US beers: Bud, Hams, Olympia, etc. but it wasn't for a lack of effort. It's just that when San Miguel was available nobody drank any other beer. When I returned to the States I looked for San Miguel. It was hard to find and although an excellent beer, it just wasn't the same.
Years later I married a young lady from the Philippines. As luck would have it, her father liked San Miguel, too. A lot. When he opened that first bottle for me it took me back twenty years. This is what I had been missing. It was chilled but not ice cold like beer is in the US. The best beers are actually better when they are not so cold. You don't need to numb your taste buds. The flavor and aroma are better at a slightly less cold temperature than you are used to.
If you really like beer and you think San Miguel is a first class beer you owe it to yourself to try some where it is brewed. Fresher is better.
