I'm convinced that I spend way too much time at the office supply store. When it takes me the same amount of time to pick out shoes as it does pens and markers - I know Im in trouble. Ive always had a weakness for pens and markers but highlighters just never seemed like an office essential to me. I picked up the Sanford Pocket Accent Fluorescent Highlighting Markers when my boys started to do more stuff on the internet and wanted to highlight things that they had printed out. I was looking for a highlighter that was non-toxic, had little or no smell to it and wouldnt pull up the ink from the paper. I decided to try these because they were packed individually, were inexpensive and were thinner than the other highlighters that were available.
Sanford Pocket Accent Fluorescent Highlighting Marker
These highlighters are bright so if you are planning on doing a lot of highlighting on papers you might want to go with the regular highlighters, not the fluorescent ones. These are suitable for use on most papers, book pages and poster board. Some thinner papers might warp or tear if you are using these to cover a large area. The ink dries fairly quickly but expect a few small smudges if you touch it right away. The yellow highlighter is bold and strong in color but it does fade after a month or so, even more so if the highlighted area is exposed to sunlight. Since the initial purchase of the fluorescent yellow weve picked up a few other colors and have been pretty pleased with them so far.
If I had to voice a complaint about this highlighter it would be that it pulls up certain types of ink. Ive never had any problem with it working on pages that were printed up from our Lexmark X43 but when using it on pages that were written with pen there were some cases of ink saturation [for lack of a better term]. The bright yellow tip was soiled with the black ink from the page and almost ruined the tip. I managed to save a few of them by rubbing out the ink on cardboard, which helped to remove the black ink from the tip. A few of these were so bad that they had to be pitched in the trash. If you should happen to experience this, try to find a rough surfaced paper or piece of cardboard and work the tip over the surface until it writes clearly. Make sure to check all the areas of the tip to ensure that you removed all the ink. If you have any concerns about this happening you can test it out using one of the points of the chisel tip so you have less ink to try and remove from it.
The cap of this highlighter needs to be pushed firmly into place to make sure that it doesnt come loose and cause a mess inside your backpack or junk drawer. There isnt a click so youll have to give it a good hard push. I tried to see if there was a small ridge that the cap connected into and couldnt seem to find one. The cap comes off rather easily so I dont suggest that you just toss this in your purse or backpack because if the metal clip on the cap gets caught on anything you could end up with yellow ink all over the place.
You can expect to get a few good months of work out of these before they start to show sings of wear on the tip or the ink supply starts to dry up. Making sure that the cap is properly replaced is a must when using these because if they are left uncapped for more than a few hours they are essentially dead. Try to keep them away from excessive amounts of heat or from freezing because this will effect the way the ink is released from the tip of the marker. Avoid getting this one your skin. It isnt toxic but it looks a little strange when you have yellow ink all over your hands. The boys have all gotten this on their hands when doing various projects and none of them experienced any rashes or reactions from it. To remove from hands use a mild soap and a fingernail brush.
Things To Know
If this sounds like a highlighter that you might be interested in make sure you pick up the 27000 series [available in 12 fluorescent colors] not the 26000 series. The 26000 are standard highlighters, not the fluorescent. They are still great markers to use for accenting but dont have the impact that the neon / fluorescent ones have. You can pick up the Sanford Pocket Accent Fluorescent Highlighting Marker at most stores that sell pens and markers; Wal-Mart, Target and K-Mart usually stock these individually and are priced anywhere from .69 to .99 cents. If you are looking to purchase larger quantities you can find these at most office supply stores.
On the body of the pen it states that you shouldnt shake it prior to use. I tried to find out why this was printed on the pen and package and couldnt find a reason. My best guess would be that it could force the ink supply to build up in the tip and result in large amounts of it being released when pressure is applied to it leaving your paper soggy or soaked with ink. I emailed Sanford about this warning and havent received a response from they yet but if they do reply I will update this portion of the review.
The Bottom Line
Barring the small problems we experienced with certain type of pen inks being absorbed into the tip of the highlighters, these have been a big help when the boys have printed up online lessons or information from the internet. The handy metal clip on the cap makes it convenient to attach it to the inside of their backpacks to keep it from sinking to the bottom. The thin size of the marker makes it easier for them to use and takes up less space in their pencil pouches when they go on field trip or have a day camp. If you are looking for a chiseled tip highlighter that will give you a bold accent, this is one that you might want to check out.
The boys use these a lot more than I do and they seem to like them more than other brands. I really think this is because the marker is thinner and easier for them to handle. As I said, since purchasing the initial fluorescent yellow highlighters Ive picked up other colors from the Sanford line and they have really seen a lot of use from the boys. They tend to use this one more than others for their school work or vocabulary lists since the bold color makes it hard to ignore what you have highlighted. If you want to make your geek or nerdling happy, toss a few Sanford Pocket Accent Fluorescent Highlighting Marker their way!
As always, thanks for the visit!
