Disclaimer: This is not a duplicate review, I posted this earlier in the wrong category. I have deleted it from there and reposted it here.
This is a great family game. There are 8 of us in my family and we all enjoy playing this game for hours on end. It is a great way for us all to use our imagination to the fullest extent. You would be amazed at some of things you can come up with in this game and children are so funny when playing this. I will give you examples further in my review.
Contents
6 Folders
6 Clip strips for in folders
2 Answer pads
6 Sets of 6 category cards
1 Timer (no batteries needed)
1 die rolling board with game instructions
6 pencils
20 sided die (this die has 20 of the 26 letters of the alphabet on it, all except z,q,u,x,y and v)
Ages 12 to Adult, 2-6 players(you can play with more players if you wish to make your own folders up and copy category cards, this is what we do with 8 players)
Object
To fill out your list of 12 categories with words that begin with the same letter that was rolled as quickly as possible before timer goes off and receive points for answers that no on else gave. Score the most points in 3 rounds to win the game.
Setup
Before beginning the first time you will need to attach a plastic clip strip onto the inside of each folder, place a set of category cards, a pencil and answer sheet into each folder using the clip strips to keep it all in place.
Playing the game
The game is played in three rounds.
1)Each player gets a folder with all the proper contents
2)Decide which category list you will use(make sure each player is using same list)
3)Set the timer by pressing the stop side down and turning dial clockwise as far as it will go
4)Place die rolling board in center of table instruction side down.
5)One player then rolls the die and calls out the rolled letter. (This die is rather have and has pointy ends, be careful to try and roll only on board so as to prevent damage to table tops.)
6)Once the letter is rolled and called out another player pressed the start side of the timer and the round begins.(You may opt to use another timing method as this timer is noisy and can be distracting to some)
7)All players then, as quickly as possible fill in the first column of their answer sheet with answer that fit the categories and that begin with the rolled letter.
8)When timer stops, players must immediately stop writing.
Scoring a round
Player takes their turn at reading their answer to each category till all categories have been done. You score your own sheet by circling only the answers that you gave that no one else gave. Then you get 1 point for each circled word and record your total for that round at the top of the column.
Continuing with the game
The next two rounds are played the same way, using the same list but rolling a new letter.(If same letter is rolled, just reroll the die)
Winning the game
After all three rounds have been played and scored, whoever has the highest total of all three rounds is the winner. If there is a tie, the player who tied play one tie breaking round, the player who scores most in that round is the winner.
Rules for acceptable answers
All answers in a round must begin with the rolled letter with the exception of the following.
"A", "An" and "The" can not be used for key letters. Example: For the book title "A Tale Of Two Cities", the letter "T" is the key letter, not the "A"
One person can not use the exact same answer in one round.
Example: You may not use the word Rose for a flower and a girls name in the same round.
When using proper names you may use the first or last name for use of the first letter but you must answer it as such. Example: If the category is celebrity and the rolled letter is "B", you could use "Bullock, Sandra" or "Brad Pitt"
You can use creative answers (in fact it is the best way to have answers that no one else has)
Example: if the letter is "F" and the category is things that are cold, instead of saying "food" or "freezing rain" You might simply say "Feet" as in having cold feet.
You can challenge an answer if you wish, but majority rules
Like I said kids can really come up with some good ones, they even make them up as we go along and if you challenge them, 9 chances out of ten you will let their answer go.
Example: We were playing on day and the letter was "L" and the category "Games". My boyfriends 11 year old son came up with "Lemon Jumping", after he explained what it was, who could argue, it sounded like some silly game you would play at a birthday party.
After he got a laugh from us for that answer, he did his darndest to come up with lots of answers like that and don't you know the little booger won the game LOL
Here is a list of some the the categories:
BABY FOODS
FAMOUS DUOS AND TRIOS
THINGS FOUND IN A DESK
DISEASES
MOVIE TITLES
BEERS
FRUITS
COLORS
ICECREAM FLAVORS
AUTHORS
WEAPONS
COOKING UTENSILS
PARKS
AND MANY MORE
If you play it as often as we do, you may even want to create your own category list as we do.
Be as creative as possible but the important thing is to have fun and relax and more than likely get a good laugh.
This game cost approximately $20-$25 but I got lucky and got it at Walmart on special at Christmas time for $14. You can find it at just about any department store or toy store.
