Before we had the internet three years ago my husband and I would either sit around playing Yahtzee, or Scrabble. I love both games but this one is my favorite out of the two. Not only does it make you think but it is the one game out of so many that I usually win when we play. We don't play it as often now as we use to and I often miss the days of not having the net or watching tv for entertainment. We had a lot of great quality time during those Scrabble battles.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
In Scrabble you can have 2 to 4 players. The game comes with 100 letter tiles, a letter bag, and 4 racks to hold each players letters on. The object of the game is for each player to form interlocking words on the board which each letter having a different value, and spaces on the board can be different values also such as you may double the word's value, or a letter may be doubled. There are also blank tiles in the game that count as zero. Of course the person with the most points at the end will be the winner.
GETTING THE GAME READY
Before starting the game you need to put the tiles in the tile bag and mix them up. Each player draws a letter out and whoever has the one nearest the beginning of the alphabet gets to start first. My husband I usually after the first game we play that whoever wins gets to go first the next time. After determining who goes first you reshuffle all the tiles and each player draws out seven tiles and places them in their tile rack.
PLAYING THE GAME
The first player has to combine two or more of their tiles to form a word and place it in the center of the board which is marked by a star. The words have to be either across or down they can not be diagonal. They then count the points they have and write it down and the play goes on to the next player who has to form a word that connects to the other players word. After each turn players have to replace the number of tiles they used by drawing out of the tile bag again. The game proceeds on in this matter.
Sometimes a player can make a word by adding on to another word and they also may be able to form two words. If you do this you do get credit for all words form which is a good thing because the more points you get the merrier. If a player thinks a word isn't a word they can also challenge this word and check it in a dictionary that all players have agreed upon using to see if it is a word. If the word isn't a word then the player loses their turn. Capitalized words, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes standing alone are not permitted when forming a word.
When someone has used all their tiles up the game is over. Any players that have leftover tiles have to take the sum of these tiles off from their score. The one with the most points wins.
IN CONCLUSION
Like I said I love this game. If you are someone that loves to think when playing a game this is definitely the one for you. I have learned to spell a lot of words because of this game and have even gotten a headache or two trying to think of the best words but I am willing to make that sacrifice. Until recently I had not found a game on the internet that came close to Scrabble but thanks to a friend of mine I found the place. There is a game on Yahoo called Literati that is almost exactly like this game. The only thing with it that is different is the fact that some words you don't think are words are, which is kind of funny.
We also had Junior Scrabble which is great for young children to learn words. My children of course lost a lot of the tiles so we ended up throwing it away but now that they are older they can play Scrabble with us which is even more fun because they are smart kids and one day they might actually beat me :-)
