| angelwings724's Full Review: Select Comfort Elite Mattress |
I had seen the TV ads or the Select Comfort sleep system. They offered a 90 day trial at no cost. It seemed too good to be true. We were in the market for a new bed because we were both having trouble with our backs. We had slept on a waterbed for many years. So, we decided to order the Select Comfort.
There were various sizes available, as well as different styles. Since we had a waterbed frame already and didn't want to part with it, we chose the mattress that fit into our waterbed. It was a custom size so it cost quite a bit more than the other sizes. But we felt it was worth it because it fit into our waterbed frame perfectly.
About the mattress
The mattress we chose was a Queen size, Elite Mattress. When it arrived, it took about an hour to set up. There was a mattress frame, 2 air mattresses, a large foam pad, the pillow top cover, air pump and hoses, wireless remote control. We set up the frame inside our waterbed, placed the 2 air mattresses inside and connected the air hoses up to the air pump, placed the foam pad on top, then placed the pillow top cover onto that. The pillow top cover attaches to the mattress frame with a zipper that goes all the way around the bed. Once we had it all put together, it was time to air up the mattresses. They system comes with a remote control with push buttons that allows you to adjust the comfort level from 0-100, the higher the number, the firmer the mattress. Once this was done, it was time to try out the bed.
What we liked about the bed initially
It was very comfortable for the first 2 years of use. It was really nice being able to customize the comfort level. I always preferred sleeping on something soft, whereas my husband preferred his firm. It also improved our backs. We no longer woke up with sore muscles and aching backs.
2 years later..
At this time, we are ready to throw the entire mattress into the trash. Both air mattresses have begun leaking air, the pump quit working, the mattresses sink in the middle like an old, cheap mattress would. We wake up every morning with back aches because the mattresses will no longer hold thier shape. We turn over and literally roll into a hole.
Customer Service
I have been to the website and have emailed customer service repeatedly. I have told them our problems and they determined that we needed a new pump. They sent one to us at no extra charge. When the 'new' pump arrived, we noticed that it was not 'new' at all, but had been refurbished. Well, it didn't take long to realize that this refurbished pump didn't work any better than our other one that stopped working. I then emailed customer service back and have yet to get a reply. This has been about a month ago.
Warranty and Price
I have to admit that I don't remember exactly what type of warranty we got on our mattress. It was a limited warranty covering only parts, but I don't remember for how long it lasted. We paid $1200 for our Select Comfort sleep system, because it was a custom fitted, elite mattress with a wireless remote control. Suffice to say, we wasted our money on this system.
We are now in the process of buying a new mattress from a local, reputable mattress store. I would never, ever recommend the Select Comfort to anyone.
UPDATE MAY 2003
We still have the Select Comfort mattress, but it is rarely used anymore. I never did get a response via email from the company, therefore, I did phone them. I was put on hold and no one ever returned to help me. At that point, I finally gave up.
We purchased a completely new bed and are very pleased with it. Our Select comfort mattress is in the floor of a spare bedroom used only for the kids' sleepovers. It continues to leak air and we are constantly airing it up again. I am sure that soon it will be tossed into the garbage since we do have a few air mattresses. I just hate the thought of throwing $1200.00 into the trash.
Perhaps other people have had better luck with this sleep system and to them, well, congratulations. However, if our mattress caused this much trouble and customer service was so un-helpful to us, then I imagine that this happens to others as well. So, beware. I continue to stand by my initial assessment. This system isn't worth buying.
Thanks for reading.
