| soberley's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 7000 |
1 month ago I went to the Select Comfort store with my wife to look at the selection they had. I had heard through infomercials (They never lie!) that this was one heck of bed.
My current inner spring mattress was about 6 years old and was getting the sleep divot thing going on. We flipped and turned and flopped the mattress, but alas it was worn out. It was a 1200.00 Serta Pillow top model, great bed when it was brand new. I am a big guy and to keep from snoring my wife out of the bed I sleep on my stomach. Over the last year I have found that as I sleep with my arms above my head they slowly fall asleep during the long night. I would then wake up shake my arms and then go to sleep again. This would happen about 3 times a night. I really started annoying me when my second Daughter was born and sleep time was at a premium.
Now on with the good part of the story! We found a Sleep Number store about 10 miles from our current house and decided to make an afternoon of it. There was no one else in the store and we had the full attention of the clerk. He seemed very knowledgeable and was very patient answering our questions about all the different models. We started out on the pressure mapping bed and he then found out Ideal Sleep number. My wife was a 45 and I was a 75. He then showed us the base 3000 Model which was very hard and seemed a lot like the Camping blow up beds
..was not a real good feeling. Then we skipped to the 5000 Model, which has a pillow top, and my wife and I liked that much better. We then asked to see the next model up the 7000. By the way the clerk acted he did not want to show us this model
.found out later he did not think we could afford it and didnt want to get our hopes up. How nice of him :P We did go to the back and try it out
man what a feeling! In the first 5 minutes you could tell a huge difference. The 7000 offers the super quiet pump and a deluxe foam topper pad. Didnt think it made a big difference, but it does.
After asking questions about this model and price and whatnot we found out they have a 20 year warranty on the bed. Sounds good, but in reality is just about as good as a standard mattress Warranty. I believe it is 2 years 100% covered and then after that it is pro-rated for every year after that up to 20 years. Simple terms, the longer you own it they less they pay, and the more you pay for replacement parts. The salesman assured us, that while the inner spring broke down after about 5 years, this bed would not as it is air that is actually holding up the body. Makes sense to me. When we ordered our bed we opted for the single wireless remote as opposed to the two wired remotes
.they both were the same price, but if you break the wired one it will cost a lot more to replace it.
Now we can talk about price. This is where most people leave the store and say Thanks for your time Mr. Salesman.. It is not a small investment. A 7000 ran us about $3300.00 Dollars delivered to our house. I tried to haggle, but this did not work. (although I did get 2 free pillows out of the deal!) There are a few options for delivery. The first is the delivery and setup option, where they come to your house and set the bed up for you. It comes with a $100.00 Price tag though. The second option is they can send it UPS at no extra cost to you. This method takes about 2 weeks and you have to do the setup yourself (By the way they say setup takes about1 hour 2 people). I chose the UPS method. The strange thing was we ordered it on Monday and the salesman said it would take 2 weeks to arrive and he would give us a call before it arrived. They would also send an e-mail before it arrived. We left Thursday to visit family and when we came back Sunday night our neighbor came over to tell us they had our bed in their garage. They said it was left on our porch Friday night and it was going to storm on Saturday so they came and picked it up for us. This is what seems strange to me about this. First it was only a week, about 4 days actually, from ordering to delivery, Second, this is a 3500.00 Bed why in the world would you not put signature confirmation on it???. That aside it showed up 1 week early and in good shape. 6- 50 pound boxes I think, Not unreasonable.
The next adventure was setup. As the manual says it should take about 1 hour 2 people. I was doing this by myself. The base was very easy to put together. It is a bunch of molded plastic panels that snap together to form, the equivalent of a box spring. Not to bad
.about 30 Minutes. The next was the mattress. This was only slightly more difficult and took about 1 hour by myself. The instructions are clear and the pictures help out a lot. It took me a lot longer than I though because I was working in a confined space
.make sure you have plenty of room to set this up! Also note after reading several of the reviews here I did unpack the foam 24 hours before and let it sit in my garage airing out before putting it on the bed. I did not notice a heavy chemical smell after that.
The first night!! The first night was a bit different. We set our sleep numbers and laid down for a good nights rest. All went fairly well my arms did not fall asleep at all! Not once. I slept all the way through the night! When I stood up I noticed a slight tightness in my back
.hmmmm. The second night I set my sleep number from 75 to 85 and had the best nights sleep Ive had in a year. My wife, on the other hand, loves her 45 number from day one. She has slept like a log ever since. People have voiced concerns about different things, such as, the bed feel hot. I did not notice this. There can be a slight fluxuation in the pressure in your bed depending on many different conditions, but it never really bothered me when it drops 5 pounds or gains 5 pounds. I hit the button and its back to my favorite number. One side note, for the money you would think they could make an auto sensing unit that could keep it at a constant setting, but oh well it works for me.
There were a few options we did not get. One was the moving base system, which allows your feet and head to raise just like an adjustable bed
not something I really need, but it is out there. Also the bed will fit into a standard bed frame or headboard and footboard setup, they even have a waterbed conversion kit so you can use your waterbed base. They will try to sell you sheets and pillows and all the standard bed stuff at the store, but I have found our deep King size sheets work just great (they even work better on the Sleep number bed then on our regular bed!)
I can say that I have been sleeping a lot better since I got my sleep number bed! If it does last 15 years or more then I will have gotten my moneys worth, but only time will tell!
