| semisweetchick's Full Review: Select Comfort Sleep Number 4000 Traditional Bed |
My husband and I have owned a Select Comfort king-sized pillow top bed for a little over a year now. Out of the box, the pump was defective, and it took quite a bit of wrangling on the phone with customer service for them to finally agree to overnight us a new pump. We easily assembled the bed but were dismayed to find the sidewalls consist only of long foam blocks. I looked at my husband and said, "How on earth are these going to hold up to having us sit on the edge of the bed each morning and evening?" Sure enough, at the first anniversary of owning our bed, we had to e-mail customer service to tell them the sidewall on my husband's side had collapsed. They said they would send us a replacement "this time" but reminded us that the "foam and fabric elements are not warranted." Gosh, I guess when I pay nearly $2,000 for a mattress, I expect it to last for at least 10 years. Lest anyone wonder whether these are the complaints of a pair of "jumbo sized" people whose weight on the sidewalls produces excessive compression, let me assure you we are pretty average. My husband is 6'3", 220 pounds, and I am 5'10", 175 pounds. We only sit on the edge of the bed for a moment each morning/evening to get in and out of bed, yet the sidewalls still only lasted one year. The sleeping surface of the bed is nice so far, and I do like being able to adjust the firmness. I regularly change my sleep number to accommodate my needs at any particular time. That said, I still feel the bed is incredibly overpriced for the very, very poor quality materials used. I doubt we will invest in another Sleep Number Bed after this one wears out -- around October, 2008, by my reckoning!
