| fanwick's Full Review: Serendipity 3 |
I have thoroughly enjoyed Serendipidity's for over 25 years and it is still one of my favorite places in the world. It is located down the street from Bloomingdales and is a short hop from Grand Central Station on the Lexington Subway line. There is also a parking garage across the street. When you see the beautiful storefront you start to get the eclectic flavor that is present through out the restaurant. The restaurant is filled with magnificent tiffany lamps and interesting decorations as well as classic ice cream parlor furniture.
Be sure to make a reservation, since they are always busy. The restaurant is very narrow and they discourage you from bringing carriages or strollers, since there is simply no place to store them (They used to ban them, but more recently they have allowed them.). Likewise this is a better restaurant for older children, who can sit patiently and won't run around. It is the site for many society children to have their birthday parties.
We always start with the Frozen Hot Chocolate, one is enough for two or three to share as an appetizer (My children always remember that this is the one place we start with dessert!). This is the most amazing drink, it features 17 different chocolates, many of which are imported. The frozen hot chocolate is served in a humungous stemmed glass with several sundae spoons straws and an underliner plate for the overflow. It is topped with freshly shaved chocolate and fresh real whipped cream.
Save room for your meal, because it is worth it! The foot long hot dogs are cooked to perfection and served with a wonderful relish. The veggie steak burger takes up the entire plate and taste great. The only think I don't recommend is the steamed fish, which one of my friends regretfully ordered against the waitress' advice.
If you have room left for the final dessert, it is a tough decision, they are all made there. I like the Sand Tarts.
There is a small boutique in the entranceway of the restaurant with many fun items. When I was a child there was a Texas Boot Store upstairs in the back (It is now just more tables) and a hat lady who would bring hats around to try on at your table (Hoping you would make a purchase.).
Serendipidity 3 is a fun place to enjoy a meal, it is an adventure.
