I live in Western NY on 5 wooded acres. It is my first summer in this house, but I was certian I would have a mosquito problem. Sure enough, we have had a wet spring so we have a bumper crop of mosquitos.
I purchased the Vac in mid May at Sam's Club for $350. It bagan catching some black flies almost immediately, although it barely made a dent in the total population. Since black flies will fly for miles looking for blood, I did not expect the vac to have much impact.
The mosquitos began appearing in early June. The vac would attract a good number of mosquitos, but would trap at most a dozen per night. Most nights the catch was zero, even though there were mosquitos out. I know because I was getting bit.
I moved the trap to different locations and replaced the bait chips to try to get a better result. No luck.
The I read the 1 star review and it all made sense to me. The CO2 that attracts the mosquitos comes out of the top of the machine. The trap that catches them is on the bottom. The vac does attract mosquitos, but only catches them if they are unluckly enough to fly by the fan.
This might also explain why it worked better on black flies. Since they like to crawl up pant legs, they may have been inclined to crawl into the net.
The over a three week period I have killed more mosquitos by hand than the vac has. It has averaged less than five mosquitos per night, most of those coming on one night.
If I am going to be outside, I still have to put on bug spray and light the citranella candels.
