Darkmistress's Full Review: Eve Bunting - Someday a Tree
A couple of years ago I ran a weekly bedtime stories event at the store where I work. At that time booksellers were scheduled to staff the Children’s information desk and I used the time to work my way through the picture books looking for likely candidates (between customers of course.) I picked up Someday a Tree at random, carried it to the info desk, leafed through the pictures, and started reading.
And the most horrifying thing happened. I started to get tears in my eyes. At the Children’s information desk in a busy store, I was crying over a picture book.
Someday a Tree describes the death of a tree. And not any tree, but the tree that caused the parents of the little girl in the story to buy the property and build their home there. A tree that hosted many picnics and would have stood from many, many years if some fool had not chosen to dump something toxic at its roots. The parents to their best to save the tree, calling in tree surgeons and having the branches propped up, but it’s no use. The tree must be cut down.
But the little girl has saved an acorn from the tree and she sneaks out after the tree has been cut down and plants the acorn so that someday there will be another tree.
The story is beautiful. It’s the only time I’ve been compelled to write to an author and tell them how much I loved a book. It has a good message about hope and the future (and not dumping things.)
Someday a Tree is also beautifully illustrated with watercolor paintings that lend enough detail to make the emotion real. Trust me, nothing sends me running faster than bad art. This art is wonderful.
Go now to the Borders.com site and order it. It’s the best $15 you’ll spend this year. Then run outside and hug a tree.
