| faithr's Full Review: Sony Handycam CCDTRV118/ Hi8 Hi-8 Analog Camcorder |
My previous camcorder was a VHS-C. I wanted to upgrade to a model that had an lcd monitor and a light, but when I went shopping for one, I found that they really aren't in production anymore. I did find a couple of models, but in my opinion they didn't make quality videos. I didn't want to go digital because I have no use for it and I don't want to spend a lot of money on MiniDV tapes. So, I decided on the HI8. It is a wonderful camcorder. It is very user friendly. The Hi8 tapes are not terribly expensive and they have a longer recording time with better quality than VHS-C. With this camcorder you can record in the dark using night shot, which works well in my opinion. It takes the color away, but you get more detail than recording with the camcorder light on. It takes a good picture indoors, which is something that can be hard to find in less expensive camcorders. I haven't had a problem using it indoors with regular lights on. The battery is charged in the camcorder, there is no separate battery charger. Some people might have a problem with this, but I don't and I also think that the battery holds a charge well. I think that this is a wonderful product, and I am very happy with it. I haven't noticed any obvious grainy shots or noise in the recordings. Tapes are played back by connecting the camcorder to the vcr and controlling the tape with the camcorder buttons. The reason that I wanted to stick with VHS-C is because it seemed easier to pop the tape into the adapter as opposed to connecting the camcorder to the vcr, but it's a lot easier than I thought it would be. This model does not come with a remote control or steady shot. I haven't had a problem with jumpy pictures regardless of there being no steady shot. It is slightly larger than some of the less expensive MiniDv's that I have seen, but I also think the extra weight helps steady your hand when you're not using a tripod.
