| adelboy's Full Review: Sony HT-DDW840 Theater System |
This unit is a perfect solution for those wanting to have a cinema experience in their own homes, without spending vasts amounts of money. That said, I did spend $1060AUD on this system, which I wasnt so pleased about as I knew it could be had for cheaper. However, I could only find this system at one outlet close to home,so I was limited in my price shopping. -Note: Sony Australias RRP is $1199AUD.
But I guess this just goes to show that I was impressed enough to outlay over a grand on a HTIB system. All things considered, it is value for money. Lets look at the reciever first.
Reciever
The reciever in this system is the STR-K840P unit, which I believe is found in some other Sony sytems. I am very pleased with this reciver,as it does all the sound formats the average users like us would want, like DTS, Dolby Digital and DPLII. In my case, only DTS and Dolby Digital were important, as I was using it for DVD watching. The power handling is 100W RMS per channel. In terms on connectivity, it has two digital inputs (1 coaxial and 1 optical) I have used up one for the DVD player (coax) and will connect my Playstation2 via the optical input. It also has multi channel input jacks, for those whose DVD players lack any digital out. These are unused on my reciever as I am connected via digital. A feature some may appreciate in a monitor video out, for video switching. The reciever also incorporates an AM/FM tuner. In terms of asthetics, it comes in a stylish silver. It is a very feature packed unit, allowing differnt sound options and user defined settings, therefore, it allows the user to customise the sound for their room.
Speakers and subwoofer
The five satellite speakers are well designed , though quite light. They do however, produce a rich enough sound to give your movies a great sonic presence. However, they are nothing without the 100W RMS powered subwoofer. One of the reasons I chose this HTIB is due to the fact it incorporated an active powered subwoofer, and at 100W it packs a punch. The centre speaker is essential to the setup and performs well, as do all the speakers. My room is quite large ( in fact i needed to purchase extra length speaker cable for the rear speakers) and yet this system is able to fill the whole room with the movies soundtrack. The bass is truly amazing and you really are emersed in the film. I used Blade 2 DVD to give this system a test run and was amazed by the sounds of bullets and explosions.
Overall
I highly recommend this system simply because it will provide you with great cinema sound. This is what i wanted and I happily got it with this system. Among this, it has a seperate reciever and a powered sub woofer, and at 100 W per channel is one of the most powerful in its class. The speakers provide rich sound. It represents value for money and is a perfect solution for those who need great sound.
